Description My friend Alena and I came to talk about the emo culture (and imitating it by staging a little photo-shoot). In Austria, this culture isn't wide spread yet, but more teenagers seem to become part of it. We're in our mid twenties and the emo culture didn't exist when we were teenagers. Of course we're intrigued; I guess we were what's now called "emo" ourselves with 13, dressing up in black and being all gloom and, well, acting cool (I'm afraid some of us still are quite emo without being aware of it, haha). Of course we were very emotional, because frankly that's what you are when you're a teen, hormones raging and all. But we didn't need to make it a statement. I guess depression has become kind of fashionable - but if you've ever encountered a seriously depressive person or delved into the depths of real depression yourself you won't find it glamorous. I noticed that a lot of people on the web (here on dA, on livejournal, in various online communities) go as far as giving cutting a cult-status.

So, what it is about the emo culture? Share your thoughts and experiences!

Feel free to ravel.

Ooooh I'm not going to get into the emo culture thing even though I COULD drop a few paragraphs here mostly griping about its origins and how like many subcultures (ie punk) it has become an entirely misguided teenage trend with little validity or purpose these days, even musically... I'm just going to say that this is a wonderful portrait with a lot of depth.

My opinion on Emo, Goth, Punk, etc can be found on my favorite pin:

"You anti-conformists are all the same"

Lol, I think it's hilarious that so called "rebellious" cultures, once they are a culture, are so alike! My opinion: be yourself, whether or not it is 'mainstream'. Do what's right because it's right, not becuase it happens to be cool at the time.

Example: I liked a few of Britney Spears songs before she was cool, during, and even now from time to time. I like them because I like the song, not because I thought she was cool. Not trying to conform, but not trying to anti-conform (isn't that the same thing, in the end?)- that's my motto.

Anyway, none of that has anything to do with this pic because, as was stated with an earlier post, this is a beutiful peice of art. Frankly, it is emotianal- but in the fully human, normal sense. The lighting, cropping, and model is perfect.

Thanks for sharing and letting us vent too lol!

More than half my school is emo... the rest preps. I personally don't get either one. depression isn't cool. It's a problem. It can ruin parts of your life. and people think thats cool? what about being your self? And preps. why do they just party they're problems away? act like they're lives are perfect just cuz daddy has a big paycheck? (well that's what they do in my town)
I think it's drama but it's more than that, i think emotions have become a fashion statment, like depression or denial because that's the only statment we were taught to make. I'm 16 and I choose to be happy.

Like the go tanning/go shopping/go boating/go party types. I think we call em' preps, because of the no pass no play rule. like with jocks or cheerleaders. The have to make all A's or they can't participate, i mean usually they cheat but still. prep, preparatory school, good grades, but mostly they're just Mall types. Fashion Zombies if you will, what ever you want to call them. Class A "populars" with all the money and none of the consequences.

Maybe it's a style...but it's nothing else...

I was emo years ago...although i didn't know the term "emo". I suppose it's a phase we pass through...teenage angst. Dramatic times hehe. But when i moved on to the real world, saw a lot of people who had more serious problems, I just thought it was superficial being all "emo". These people had problems and yet they were so happy when with friends, you wouldn't say they have problems or so. So yeh, to me that was a superficial stage of teenage angst...I'm over it.

Nice image and concept, keep up the good work!

This is such a beautiful shot! i don´t see it very emo like, i just enjoy the lighting and the model is very beautiful!
i´m almost 23 and when i was a teen there was "gothic" or "just normal" now there are so many ways to call yourself, and i think emo culture (in my country is really growing now) is a fashion, and as all fashion does it will disappear sometime, but now even younger girls and boys are been "emo" and with that we all asume they cut themselves but it´s not that general as i came to notice..., i´m still trying to understand them though!

quizzard87 In reply to Staged [2007-04-18 18:43:07 +0000 UTC]

And although this portrait is gorgeous, I wouldn't really consider it emo (which makes it much better in my eyes). Look at myspace for some emo shots Im sure I could give you plenty of "emo portaits" just from friends of my friends...

Emo is just lame.

Hehe, thanks. Well, I don't really have any expertise in emo style, I just tried to imitate the emo-stuff I see on dA every day. Well, at least my version, haha.

In America, especially living in New Jersey the emo culture is huge. And while the music that goes along with the culture is all doom and gloom, any actually emo people are quite loud obnoxious and vain socially smoke and drink, but really aren't what you would think as depressed or what not (although it does make slitting your wrists look cooler than it it which soo pisses me off). I was recently in Sweden for 2 weeks and slightly surprised at only seeing about 5 actually emo, although there were a lot of goths and punk rockers (which are very different that the emo look). But as I said I am used to seeing them crawl around shows and malls over here. I don't know what the others have said because I speak English, but yeah that's my input.
