Description Lincoln is a scout by trade. He travels the galaxy finding new worlds. He does supplement his income with a shady deal from time to time. Try as he might he can never stay out of trouble for too long.
Lincoln is smart. Were’ talking genius smart so he finds most people boring. Others don’t seem to make the same intellectual connections that he does. So he usually travels the universe alone.
It wasn’t always that way. Back in the war he had friends, a group of privateers in the service of the military. Piracy in space: the danger, the terror, the death. By haven, he did miss it some times. They were close, like family.

After the war he flew solo for a while but eventually he was joined by his old war buddy’s daughter Reena. She wasn’t getting along with her dad and Lincoln was glad for the extra help.

The last year has been comfortable with few complications. She’s a smart kid, takes direction well, and seems to be keeping Lincoln out of trouble. Occasionally she gets emotional for no apparent reason and some times she asks too many questions. Of course working out the bathroom schedule on a small scout ship has been a bit tricky (What does she do in there for 2 hours?) but for the most part it’s been good.

Today is Reena’s birthday. She’s 21 years old. Lincoln grumbles about feeling old.
“You’re not so old.” she says “You’ve aged quit well.” and then stares at him awkwardly.
“Here I got you a gift.” says Lincoln. He produces as small box about the same size that usually holds a ring.
Reena’s cheeks flush with excitement and her eyes grow large. Hands trembling she opens the box. It’s a plasma filter for her gun.
“Since they stopped making the Backman 48 Range Pistol those have been hard to find. It’ll increase the power efficiency on your blaster. If you’d like, I’ll help you install it.”
“Thank y-you it’s just what I wanted.” Her eyes well with tears and she dashes off to her room sliding the door shut with a loud slam.
Lincoln sighs, “So emotional all the time. It’s just a filter.”

Some years ago my friend Brett asked me why I didn’t draw any of his characters. He’s like a brother and I felt bad so, promptly 6 years later… here you go Brett!!!

Here are some links to older drawings of the characters. [link] Lincolns style has changed quit a bit. [link] Reena looks about the same.

Thanks, that's cool of you to say.
Stories are fun. What's the point of doing a drawing if you don't have something to say?

Wow. Reading the comments, it sounds like you put a lot of work into these clothes--I definitely got the aviation vibe, especially with Reena's collar. (I really get a kick out of that, not sure why..) I'm very intrigued by all the gadgets hanging off Lincoln's belt. Anything super fancy there? I'm assuming that's a mic of some sort on his vest. I also love all the little pockets.

Oh, and Reena's socks peeking out of her boots. Nice touch.

As for back story...I knew right away what those emotional moments were. Poor Reena. Maybe someday she'll finally break down and tell Lincoln--probably scream it at him, actually...

staino In reply to inkeverlasting [2012-02-26 18:11:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Reena's fluffy collar is fun the best part of her costume, oh, and thanks for noticing her socks. It's cold out there in space.
That thing on Lincoln's vest is an oxygen tube he has a breath mask he attaches to it. And those egg like things hanging from his belt are bolos. I think they might blow up after he entraps the bad guy.
Some day Reena will be patching Lincoln up after a fight and her will look at her and realize that it's not the bandages but the healer that's cure. Then it will get all romantic and kissy and stuff.
I apologize for taking so long to respond to your comment. Artists (even armature ones like me) are often moody, broody, and dark. Ive been caught up in non-art stuff that really isn't any fun and I have neglected DA.

Hey, it's good that you are stuck on here all the time! Don't worry about it. That Lincoln and Reena moment reminds me of Raiders of the Lost Ark--best cutesy scene ever. I hope you're feeling a little brighter despite whatever you're going through!

Thanks for noticing. I tried to give them both different styles of spats. My idea of space looking characters is really just world war two aviation clothing.

Curadh In reply to staino [2012-01-31 07:04:01 +0000 UTC]

It's practical stuff. I'm kinda surprised spats aren't still used. I was actually looking at toy Springfields and thinking how cool an energy rifle would be if you fired 10 shots, then had to manually eject the spent energy cartridge. Mind you, that's more WWI stuff, but still nifty. It also makes room for the old Mauser C96 pistols, or even cylinder-based energy pistols. I'll just stop now.

Guns!
I used to collect 12' G.I. Joes and use them a reference when I did character designs. I have no idea were all those weapons and little uniforms are now.

That is an awesome use for an awesome toy. Toys are such underrated reference material, really. Except for Barbie. What the hell is my daughter supposed to learn from that crap range of motion!

Very nice work. I appreciate the way they look similar in equipment (no guy in full powered armour and chick in crack-hugging PVC), yet different in details. Like how both have a pistol in a tie-down holster, yet they are distinctly /different/ pistols, different holsters, even different styles of belt. As always, I admire your work.

Thanks! I tried to go for a space-cowboy look with these two. What I did is combined a western look with 1940's aviation clothing. The gear had to be different yet they had to look like they inhabited the same universe stylistically. There are some similarities though. Even though they both have different holsters, the guns are angled forward on the leg. Lincoln likes his gun set up this way and the girl admires him so she mimics his style. You always make me laugh. Well not always. Most of the time. Well actually I usually don't laugh I just smile. Darn it! This is turning into a back handed compliment. I always do that. Well not always. Most of the time. Some times it comes out o.k. Its, ah forget it. Sigh... You made me laugh this time anyway.

Aha ! The drawing is great, but the story makes it even better. It's always better when you know more about the characters. Space pirates are soooo cool ! ^^ Love their equipment. But above all, their faces are... so good ! So expressive and specific ! Great work.
And thank you for making me discover 's gallery !

The faces were fun to draw. I wanted the girl to have a touch of playful attraction in her eye as she looked at the male character.

ChibiNomad In reply to staino [2012-01-27 03:13:03 +0000 UTC]

Kinda. More so... kinda like the scifi series Firefly, if you've ever heard of it.

Way in the future, spacey, planets are colonized, etc. My character is a mechanic on a huge asteroid-mining ship. But she dresses like a guy so that the other mechanics won't try anything, so her hair is really short. (she's very, very straight, she just doesn't want to get *eh-hem* molested. )

staino In reply to ChibiNomad [2012-01-27 03:28:52 +0000 UTC]

I love Firefly!
I made a character for the Serenity Role-playing game. He was a mechanic just like your character! And I suppose he doesn't want other mechanics molesting him either. I thinks that's why he caries a big sword. Actually It's just for chopping reavers. Here is a picture of him: [link] Sadly we only played once.

Aw. But at least you know what I'm talking about! Most people just give me weird side-glances like I'm on PCP and mentioning "fireflies" is bad.

Anyhoo, I drew a picture of her. (My scifi girl)

And, I've been too shy to post it until now... but I drew a doodle in my chemistry notebook a few days ago, and... well, you'll get it.

Lol I carry printer paper with me everywhere. Lots of my character sketches are in my notebooks, like these: [link] [link] [link]

I try and smudge over the notebook lines a lot, but it's still pretty visible. :I
