Description For years the Smiling Man terrorized the village of Torren. He lived among the stones in a crumbling dros atop a hill that overlooked the town. Few ever saw him but his influence was felt, he took what ever he wanted, food, tools, livestock, and on occasion a child would go missing.

Rebecca had seen him once. He was slim, pale, and tall as a tree. True she was only seven years old at the time, in those days every grownup was tall to her. His head was bald but for a few wispy hairs and he had a twisted beard streaked amber by tobacco. The Smiling Man had come to speak with the town elders about the noise caused by all the pigs in Farmer Ieuan’s mud patch. Every one cowered from his pale eyes and long toothed grin. Oh, that grin, that evil twisted yellow grin. He took two of Ieuan’s best pigs, a mated pair, and destroyed the rest expelling thunderous fire from his hands. Ieuan’s wife wept, the Smiling Man laughed, and Rebecca threw a rock. It hit the smiling man in the back of the head. He turned his monstrous gaze in her direction, his smile gone, he huffed spittle shouting, “Who? Who did that? Which one of you filthy maggots threw that stone?!” Rebecca ran.

She hid in the marshes up to her neck in muddy water until nightfall, then crept home to her Mum and Dad. She heard her parents whispering about how the Smiling Man had burned Ieuan’s cottage and barn to the ground in rage. Rebecca caught a cold and was bedridden for days. When she was well enough to go out she found that no one, not even Farmer Ieuan, was angry with her. She had stood up to he Smiling Man.

Years passed and Rebecca grew older. At age 16 she kissed her Mum and Dad goodby in their sleep and snuck away from the village in the night. She traveled the world, met some unlikely characters, both good and bad, learned to swing a sword. She returned to Torren at age 21 to put the Smiling Man in his grave.

She spied the village from a distance, all seem peaceful and almost pleasant. She would deal with the tyrant first and visit loved ones latter. She crept like a cat up the hill and entered the jagged pile of stones ready to slay her lifelong enemy. He was waiting. Scavenger birds had scattered his bones and left his black robes in tatters. The Smiling Man was dead. Unknown to Rebecca he died of a coughing fit five years ago.
She picked up his skull.
His grin had grown wider.

It's the details that make this such an amazing piece of work. The textures in the terrain, the shading in the armor, the realistic folds in the clothing, the braids in her hair...nothing has been left unattended and Blaine's attention to these little details shows a talent and discipline that is clearly evolving. What is so impressive is that you can go back, peruse Blaine's past work and truly see where he continues to mature and master his technique, while still keeping the subject matter interesting and dynamic. While it may be obvious that a great deal of his inspiration comes from gaming and other sources, I still can't help but be drawn into the subject matter. The story vignettes add another bit of depth to the work which further enthralls. Awesome work, and I'm looking forward to more of the same.

This is another strong piece of work from you, Blaine. Pose, armor, attitude...and sweet on details. Even the cluster of boulders adds balance to the composition...and a solid base for the character. I have to agree with the comment about contrast. A battle between light and dark would really add punch to your images...and depth to your characters.

The fact that you provide us with the backstory is a great plus. Inspiration is incredibly important to the creative process! It's nice to get to see what you started with. Including the story, however, is a double-edged sword. We get to see where you got your inspiration...but it also allows us to measure the image against the story. You capture her defiant attitude well...but the skull of The Smiling Man is so small and unimpressive in her hand, that the menacing element of their connection is minimized. Maybe she is wondering..."What was all the fuss about?"

Thank you for the thoughtful critique. I'm pleased that you took the time to examine my drawing. I appreciate your kind words and positive comments.

I agree, I need to have more contrast in my images. I'm taking a long and slow return from doing pencil sketches exclusively and I need to work on giving my images a more "finished" look.

Though not always the case, I made up the story after I had finished the drawing. Sometimes I don't want to post a story with every character I create but folks kind of demand it now.
Your right, the back story is a double-edged sword. You probably know this only too well from you experience as an illustrator. Your just so darn good at telling a story with an image though!

As for the size of the skull, I had worried about that myself. I debated about it and redrew it twice in the sketching stage but decided to keep it small. I wanted hero to be the focus of the image. I may have over done it!

Blaine, I cannot count the number of times I've finished a drawing...and then saw ways that I could've done it better. It's the nature of the Beast! Neither the size of the skull...nor the level of contrast lessens your illustration in any way. Keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to it!

Is the story happy or sad? Hahaha frustrated plans, yet desired results... I think she is a beautiful piece! I love how she is "Sexy" yet not really "Sexual" the proportions are attractive but not ridiculous! It's wonderful! Emotional! And powerful!

Happy or sad? A little of both I suppose.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my drawing and commenting, so cool of you.

I thank you, that's cool of you to say.
The pose is not too original but I think I worked pretty hard on designing the outfit, so I'm glad that tuned out. Of course the rocks in the background were the funnest thing to draw! I'm happy you like her.

Thanks for checking out my drawing. I'm glad you like it.
Yeah, I worked my @$$ off in designing all the little details of her outfit. I'm always afraid before posting something like this. There comes a point if I spend to long on a drawing I begin to see it as total crap. Most folks seemed to like this one though. I'm greatly revealed.

Must've missed this one... very cool work here!
I'd similar idea for a sculpt, a female Hamlet character talking to Yorrick's skull.
She's half way done since ages sitting in the closet waiting to be finished.

I have been thinking of doing a series of short stories with illustrations. This would be one of them. Though I must admit I'm still trying to figure out what I would do with them. Perhaps publish an e-book?

I freakin love this piece! It looks like you incorporated traditional pencil work and combined it with a digital aspect.Other than the whole Hamlet thing, was there more that inspired you to draw this piece? I am so jealous of your skills! I desperately wish I had the money for a drawing tablet...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

staino In reply to VanillaLatte31 [2012-01-20 03:28:39 +0000 UTC]

I drew this with mechanical pencils then scanned it into Photoshop and darkened the lines added some tones and there you have it. The original drawing is about 13 inches tall. Oh,as for inspiration I ripped off about six other drawings. Mostly from role-playing books. I have a drawing tablet but I have never used it. I really should get into it. I also need to learn to paint digitally. I've got a long way to go.

I like the fact that she is dressed in attire that fits her well . It looks to be maybe a lite leather armor, practical and functional at the same time ,it would actually work in real life . Plus I love the fact that she doesn't have exposed shin where it shouldn't be, I like the way you drew this whole piece . Nice story also, to bad he wasn't still alive when she got home, not a total loss though look at the adventures she had that she might not of if he had died before she left.
Anyway nice work as always my friend !

You have a real talent with armor and clothing. The story is great, and the pose of the character is very well done. good use of space, but I wish there was a little more contrast. Perhaps if it had some deeper shadows, the highlights would really pop.

This is just me being a knit-picker. I really enjoyed this piece, and I can't wait to see what you have brewing up next. I really want to commission you to draw my girl-friends old DnD character, but being a college student makes that something I have to put off until after graduation.

Anyway, keep up the fine work.

I agree I need more contrast in my work over all. Everything is flat, there needs to be more depth. Hopefully I'm making my way out of doing sketches into more finished looking work. Thanks for your comments.
As for what's next? I have a bunch of character designs on my desk waiting to be finished. A space cowboy, a dark elf, and a superhero girl. Who know which one I will finish first.

So many details ... Great shading, too. Almost looks like a traditional drawing (which I mean as a compliment). Nice back story, too. How Rebecca is holding the smiling (now grinning) man's skull makes me think of Hamlet a bit ...

Amazing, Blaine! I don't know if this story really exists, but I thought the art was really creative! The picture even reminds me a little bit of the "To be or not to be" from Shakespeare... Loved how you used the shadows and the so many perfect details!!!

Thank you so much for the compliment!
This image IS inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet. You are very perceptive.
As for whether or not the story really exists... I made up the story, it is a work of fiction, so it's not real. Reality is the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional... Fiction is not real yet a story composed of fictional elements is real. So my final answer is, well, I don't know.
