Description Sunlight is not going to warm me, not like the asphalt that summer
Blistered my feet walking home - shade was no good to me then.

Swolen with fluid, my feet were pierced with a needle that evening
Later, I saved my own skin, cut from the flaps on my soles.

Children in Phoenix go barefoot only in winter and autumn
Summers are deadly for kids. Heat stroke and unlocked pool fences claimed us.

It's twenty days 'til my birthday. Now I am looking back, thinking
I would almost like to burn my feet raw again,

just to recapture the feeling of twelve years old and invincible,
walking my best friend home, barefoot in the heat.
