Sickbay of the USS POTEMKIN 2130 hours. Lt. T'Var reads in silence as she sits in vigil over her good friend Lt. Gabby Gutierrez. Something strange occurs. My OCs by www.deviantart.com/s2ka .

Gabby has been in a coma for weeks after suffering apparently severe injuries during a transporter accident. Dr. Patel and Nurse Ashley have done all that is medically possible aboard ship to heal her and after the hospital ship where she was to be transferred to was diverted, Gabby remains here. An attempted mind meld did bring her out of the coma briefly, but it caused a surprisingly violent reaction and she had to be sedated again. Dr. Patel has stated that 'only time will tell now if she will recover.."

Every evening after her duty shift, T'Var comes to sickbay and sits with her friend for several hours before retiring for the night. This is something done out of loyalty, because there is no logical reason to be there. T'Var knows this and often thinks about what her father, Solkor, would say if he knew she was doing this.

"T'Var, what is the logic behind your actions?" Solkor would say, in his deep, monotone voice. "You are not a medical practitioner and your mere presence at this woman's bedside has no therapeutic or medicinal value. Your actions are illogical."

T'Var can almost hear his voice and admonishment of her actions, but she continues her nightly vigil unabated, because she also knows that he also respects loyalty.

"In this life there are few things as important to successful and long lasting personal relationships than loyalty." Solkor told her on one occasion. "Loyalty to one's family, friends, and career are very important and must not be taken lightly. Loyalty must be earned, and when it is, it must be honored by actions."

Gabby has earned T'Var's friendship and loyalty over the eighteen months they have served together and been roommates. Gabby's friendliness, and even tempered nature has made T'Var's time aboard the POTEMKIN interesting. She has introduced T'Var to many new things and experiences, from g-string underwear to singing karaoke, to sun bathing. Gabby has been patient and understanding, after starting out somewhat stand offish. She had lost her last roommate and close friend, killed on an away mission and she was apprehensive about making a new one.

T'Var soon proved to be the perfect roommate for a human recovering from personal loss. T'Var was and is not loud or personally invasive. She is very neat and not talkative. To Gabby, T'Var is pleasently awkward and innocent, but open minded and willing to learn and try new things. Both women are young but strong and brave, with strong work ethics and the desire to teach and learn from one another. Gabby helps T'Var understand humans and T'Var helps Gabby understand Vulcans. Both women had preconceptions about the other's species before getting to know each other, but now those preconceived notions have faded and a true friendship has evolved.

Now, in a way to honor that friendship, T'Var spends part of her off duty hours sitting with her friend. She is not expecting a miracle or anything for that matter, she is just spending time with her friend, as she knows Gabby would do for her if the situation was reversed. The nightly vigil has given T'Var time to read more of the teachings of Surak and study more of the history of the Reformation on Vulcan. In his writings, she has found much in the way of 'Balance'. The book she is reading tonight is a series of essays written by Surak during the most turbulent time of Vulcan's Reformation. Surak was attempting to teach the Vulcan clan of Golimirra, one of the most violent clans of Pre-Reformation Vulcan, known for constantly fighting their neighbors, actually revering more peaceful persuits during the lull between the wars.

Surak, after much negotiation, was allowed to visit with their leader to discuss the reasoning behind starting the next war. The two men didn't agree on very much and little was gained by the initial discussion, but the two did agree to meet again. Then after that meeting, they agreed to trade correspondence, because the fighting season had arrived and Golimirra was going off to war again. Surak took no part in the war and did not take sides during it, even though he and the Golimirra leader were now acquainted and began to respect each other's views. Surak kept up the correspondence with the leader during the entire campaign and to his surprise, the leader did also. When the fighting season ended, the armies of Golimirra had won some small success and returned home to much fanfare and rejoicing. The leader summoned Surak to his home and the teacher came in haste. The two men began their discussions again and this time, both began to see the other's point of view a little more and that tempered their talks, giving them a more balanced outlook on the discussion all together.

Finally after his perseverance and dedication to his cause, and that cause was to win peace, Surak was eventually successful in his endeavour.

'Balance, achieved through understanding, can help one see the truth. Loyalty to one's principles shall win the day. Being there for a friend, opens the heart to possibilities.' Surak.

Those words often are a source of clarity for T'Var when her logic is... uncertain.

As she sits beside Gabby's bed in sickbay reading those words again, the lights in the medbay suddenly dim, significantly. T'Var, so engrossed in her reading doesn't at first notice a flicker of light coming from Gabby's bed. The Vulcan looks up from her book to check on her friend only to see what appears to be fading illumination around Gabby's body as the lights in sickbay come back on.

As T'Var leans a little closer to check on her friend and find the cause of the brief illumination, Gabby's eyes open suddenly, catching the Vulcan by surprise.

"Hey there buddy!" Gabby says in a surprisingly clear voice. "I am so glad to see you again!"

For a moment T'Var stares open mouth as she hears Gabby's calm and familiar voice. The Vulcan quickly regains her composure and for the briefest of instances, Gabby swears she sees a slight smile on T'Var's face.

"Lieutenant Gutierrez, it is agreeable to see you conscious and in a more lucid state." T'Var replies in her calm, monotone voice. "How are you feeling?"

Gabby smiles with a look of relief on her face... and the feeling of being safe for the first time in weeks as she lifts her bandaged hand to pinch herself in order to make sure this is real...

T'Var notices the bandage on Gabby's hand where there wasn't one moments before....

"T'Var my friend, I feel great! And glad to be back" Gabby says as she lifts herself up on her elbows. She starts to notice her where abouts and the medical gown she's wearing and questions begin forming in her head... but that'll be for later.

"Back from where, may I ask?" T'Var asks as she sets her book down.

Gabby sighs deeply and closes her eyes for a moment. Pausing to get her thoughts together and explain the unexplainable to her friend.

"Let's just say, I've been in the mirror...."
