If you want a copy now, just look in my current journal and there's a link for it there. This has the original cover for the book.

This new cover "might" be on a re-release later on this year.

I wish I could sketch like this, can you imagine what the actual finished piece would look like?

But seriously, I think I'll leave the inking for the professionals.

i'm pretty sure it could probably devastate anything in its path....but inking is where the talent lies....giving the image the depth and colour it needs

Koolaidmaid [2005-07-23 17:21:16 +0000 UTC]

Wow. All that image detail is facinating. Man thats alot of work. I always muddy my images when trying that. I hate to think of the inking that is going to be needed for this one. O.o I'm just dabling in inking myself at the moment. No fancy pens yet. Just differnt sizes of generic ones. I figure I'll learn the basic with those. Then move up to the expensive stuff. hehe.

stalk In reply to Koolaidmaid [2005-07-24 09:23:48 +0000 UTC]

Actually, if you look closely, there's not that much detail in there. I think the big black areas (filled with pencil here) give the illusion that there is. Once an inker bangs out those blacks there isn't much to it but some rendering and linework. When inking something like this I usually start with the big black areas as it makes it seem like more of the page is done and you can easily spot if the negative space is working or not.

As far as "how expensive" to go with your materials it doesn't really matter. I've known folks who pay top dollar for their art stuff and the work is only so-so, but I've also seen people work with "cheap" ball point pens and make things look outstanding. It's all a mind-set. If you can make a three dollar marker pen work for you why are you going to pay twenty bucks for it? I think alot of it is also archival quality. If you want the work to outlast you then yeah your going to have to pay a bit more, but if you can produce quality stuff with "average" costs then why not?

Koolaidmaid In reply to stalk [2005-07-24 18:07:42 +0000 UTC]

Very interesting. Though with all the lines and busy theme you have. Its still alot of detail. More then most are used to putting on paper. I like to make my stuff last if possible. I like the pens I am useing now. Probably because they are cheap. *chuckles* I never knew art was so expensive. hehe.

Sequential76 [2005-07-23 15:42:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh man your so smooth.

I pencil and ink my own stuff (lately). I look foreword to having mucho problems rendering like this when I might have to be teamed with an inker. My pencil are very light loose and squiggly

I could easily scann this into photoshop and darken your lines to make it seem inked. Great job.

stalk In reply to Sequential76 [2005-07-24 09:40:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man, I appreciate that.

I think inkers are split 50/50 on my work. I've worked with some that hate my pencils because they claim they're too dark or tight and that I use too much pencil. Others love that I don't skimp on anything and render stuff out completely (part of my old school charm I've been told) and they never have to second guess what's going on in the page.

I've just always geared myself at pencilwork. I tried the 'ol pencil-and-ink-myself thing early on but I was sooo lacking in the inking that all I was doing was tracing and ruining otherwise decent pencils. I can see how it's easier though to just "squiggle" and go in with the ink to finish the piece, you get alot of good mistakes that way that often help a piece. Truth is, I'm just one of the laziest guys around and inking my own stuff kills me. I feel like I'm drawing the same thing twice, so I try to leave it to someone else better suited for the job.

Sequential76 In reply to stalk [2005-07-26 13:50:02 +0000 UTC]

I agree, Kind of kills the moment knowing you'll have to reline a page. I'm sure I'll adapt when I'm teamed up. I also had a thought when I am teamed up, the inker can see what kind of style that I'm trying to go for. He can just look up some of the work I inked myself as a template.

Cripes. I'm preparing some sequential art out to Marvel, hoping that maybe they'll hire me, and every time I feel like I know what I'm doing, I find something that just blows everything I've done completely out of the water.

Seriously, this is an extrodinary piece of lineart. What kind of pencils do you use to get your lines so crisp? Wow, I just... wow. Yeah. EXCELLENT stuff here. Best of luck in everything ya do.

stalk In reply to Darqnaut [2005-07-23 04:50:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for viewing and commenting. First off, I'm glad to hear your sending stuff off to Marvel and I wish you the best of luck with that and no matter what happens keep striving to better your art everyday.

As for my lineart, I jump around alot using pencils (or leads anyway since I mainly work with tech pencils and holders) everything from a 2H, F, H, HB...pretty much whatever mood I'm in. I also work from left to right on the page thus keeping the amount of smudging down since I'm right-handed. Every once in a while I'll draw myself into a corner then I just slap a scratch sheet under my hand to prevent me smudging something by accident and it cuts down on eraser shavings too.

Thanks once again and keep us posted on that Marvel sub.

~salutes~ I shall at that! I already have page 1 up in my gallery here (Marvel changed their submission guidelines somewhat, now asking for a 5 page vignette instead of 3, 3 page vignettes), and page 2 should be up sometime tonight. So y'know, if you're bored, feel free to tear it apart- I know I need it.

BTW, Thanks for the insight!

I'll try to check it out. As for "tearing it apart" I'll leave that to the pros like Neal Adams who if he's ever reviewed you, you'll understand what I mean.

Oh man, you are SO my hero just for making a cover that looks like it has something to do with what's going on in the book. Seems a lost art these days. Excellent job with this. I like how they're ringed around the monster--it's a different kind of composition than you usually see, but it works. Gives the thing a real feeling of action and motion. It's always great to see your pics, man! Good work!

stalk In reply to Gunmetalblack [2005-07-23 03:51:16 +0000 UTC]

That's the thing with modern comic cover art. It seems that more art directors and editors, especially with the big companies want to see standard "iconic shots" of their characters rather than the old covers of yore which at least hinted at the stories interior. Marvel is severly guilty of this, especially with titles like Spider-man and X-Men. DC holds it's own but some Superman and Batman covers have this same quality.

While not bad or wrong, they most certainly do not help in giving the casual passer-by a "hint" of what's going on in that respective book. The first DIVAS book had the "iconic" shot to it due to the market it was being sold in, but now that there's a possible mainstream future for the book I felt that a more action oriented cover would benefit it and help in moving it off the shelves.

As for my choice in design, I must've gone through a ton of roughs before settling on this one. My main point in this is to move the eye from the title (which will of course be up in the top) to Jenny's blazing fist, across her to the monsters shadowed face and toward poor Susie struggling in his grip. This leads to Adela firing up her power, across her and toward the bottom right-hand corner where hopefully the reader will flip to the first page.

Though the ringed composition you speak of works too.

Gunmetalblack In reply to stalk [2005-07-23 04:27:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've about had my fill of "Iconic shots"--some artists can get away with it, but most artsist just draw the same picture so many times one gets the feeling I've bought the same issue over and over again.

Thanks for going into the process and the choices you made in terms of the composition. It's really interesting for me to get a sense of how other people compose shots and how they see things.

Keep up the good work!

No prob...I just hope it made sense. Can't type as well as I would like.

As for the repetitive cover images, I hear ya. I've given my comics away to my newphew thinking they were extra copies only to find out that they were totally different issues.

YAARRRGGGHHH! Oh well.
