plenty of opinions are harmful, usually if they pertain to someone's race, sexuality, gender, and/or if those opinions are ignorant to facts like climate change deniers.

That's because people -don't- keep their opinions to themselves. They express them around other people whether they like them to or not, they also allow those opinions to influence their decisions regarding human rights, other's safety and well being, how they treat the ecosystems and so on.

So yeah, someone thinking pineapple on pizza is good ain't gonna harm anyone, but someone's view that white people are better than every other kind of person IS and DOES harm people, same for those that think being lgbt+ is evil/bad/immoral. or that we should just keep pumping all kinds of disgusting chemicals and exhaust into the air and oceans because """cLiMaTe ChaNgE isN'T ReAlZ!""" because not only do these opinions stem from a place of hate and ignorance, it has nothing to do with preference of unimportant things like food, television, a favorite color. it has to do with how others live and the future of human societies.

Harmful opinions can and do hurt and kill people. using the excuse of "ITZ JUST AN OPINION!!1!" doesn't change that.
