Description Let's look at the definition of feminism: "The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men."

So basically, it's a movement that focuses on the rights and issues of women, and how to try and find ways of getting them the same opportunities as men in society.

Something I often hear is 'How can feminism be for equal rights if it's just focusing on one gender?' Well, two things.
1. If one group is already better off than the other, there's likely a movement focusing on bringing the other one up. But, it's not taking away from the first group either, it's just trying to give more to the second group.
2. If you don't believe that first point, as I know a lot of people don't believe that patriarchy exists...well, consider this. Feminism focuses on women, because there are just some things that don't apply to men, and vice-versa, too.

Feminism exists to cover women's issues. Things like unequal payment, domestic violence against them, sexual assult/rape and how they can be beaten or raped, but their attacker may not get justice for it, the demand for a thin/attractive/sexually pleasing 'feminine' image, and the body and slut shaming they receive whether they do or don't fit the criteria, self hate starting from a young and vulnerable age, expectancy to be a mother and not want or need abortions, tampons/pads not being for free as well as periods being seen as disgusting, and many things like their feelings and speaking out being blamed on PMS.

Men have issues too, like unfair child custody battles, the 'masculine' image they're told to maintain (biceps, always wanting sex, liking sports, insert stereotype here), how there's no long term birth control available for men, domestic violence, sexual assault and rape, how the last three things I listed aren't taken seriously with them, especially when it's a women who does those things, and many stay silent about it, and how men's activist and rights movements aren't taken seriously because in SOCIETY, they're better off than women, and somehow people think that means they have no gender-related problems whatsoever.

And then there's many, many non-gender specific issues that would take forever to list, and can probably be put in different movements that either do or should exist. Feminism doesn't cover this or men's rights. It's not supposed to. But that doesn't mean it's not important. It means that it needs to exist ALONG WITH OTHER THINGS AS WELL.

Something the horror show of Tumblrland probably doesn't tell you, is that feminism isn't there to cover EVERYTHING. You can be a feminist and still support equal gender rights, solving men's issues, LGBTQA+ rights, the rights of different cultures and races, etc...but those things are not a part of the feminist movement itself.

Feminism is for everyone who support women having equal rights as men, by looking at their gender-specific issues and trying to find solutions.

So, if you support women's rights, want to help solve their issues, and believe they should have the same opportunities that men already have, you are a feminist. AND, if you also support men's rights, non-gender specific rights, and hell, HUMAN rights in general, you are a feminist, but much, much more, too. That should NOT go unnoticed. <3
