EDIT: Flash is gone away, so you can watch the animation on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QivMb_…In the year 1595, British poet Edmund Spenser (1552-1599) composed a series of sonnets which he titled Amoretti. This animated short is an adaptation of sonnet 75 of Amoretti translated into American Sign Language.
Not only is the language of the original sonnet archaic and beautiful, but also the concrete imagery and the concepts are quite romantic. For these reasons, I chose this sonnet as the subject of an animated short I wanted to make in American Sign Language.
This animation is the result of a collaborative project. Artists and other contributors in six different countries and eight states in the U.S. have contributed art, music, and linguistic consultation to this project. The artists Rex in St. Petersburg, Russia; Kristan (kaykaykit) in New Brunswick, Canada; and Kris Lewis in the United States have especially contributed a lot of work to this project. Rex alone drew almost 100 keyframes of the sign language.
The music in this animated short is copyrighted by their respective composers, and I received their permission to use their music in this collaboration.

So beautiful... *starts to cry tears of joy.* I'm touched.... I'm going to show this to my mom. She took sign language in high school, and she still knows a good amount of sign language. So, I'm sure she'll love it.

I love the idea of using American Sign Language for this poem, both the poem, the language and culture around the language, contain such a beauty that really can't be described in words, or signing. I truely enjoyed watching this and I do belive I am going to show this to my Sign Language teacher to see what she thinks about it. I liked that you didn't have the exact meaning of each word/sentence, rather the concept of the sentences/words. Not a lot of people do that because they don't really know the ideas of concepts in Sign Language and even fewer use the amazing, visual language in things such as these. Thank you for displaying this so that others who do not know the beauty of the language of Sign may see it.

This is so beautiful. It's sweet and simple. Even though I don't know sign language, the animation of it in here is so smooth and well done. The poetry is wonderful and the voice natrrating in is very fitting. So gorgeous.

Really? Well, I'm glad you got something out of this poem. I think it is very succinct and well worded. I first came across it while studying British literature in college. You can read more about its origin in the description of the animation.
