Description Political debates are going on so I'm submitting art...

Finally finished... I decided to get more practice cell shading. Wasn't happy with it until I finished it and decided I really liked it. It's not perfect, but I like it. GO ME!!

Daron's a Snowy Owl... decided the idea of snow falling was appropriate........ that and he lives in the heart of the Akbroal Mountains. Much snow...

Okay, here's the in-depth descriptions of Daron and his race, like I promised. If you don't care, skip it...

Okay, first of all, Daron is of a pure-hearted race of beings, considered by many to be the most graceful and heavenly beings in the realm. The Elves call them AliElfs, or "Winged Elves" (simply because the Elves are vain and decided that because Daron's people looked sorta like Elves, the Elves had a right to call dibs!), often shortening the name to Alaefs. Humans call them Angels. Lesser creatures call them Bird-folk. Morgine calls Daron an "Overgrown feather-duster" (those two don't get along...) They are basically half humanoid, half bird, with angelic powers and qualities. Unlike the Elves, who consider honor and family above all things, the Alaefs live as a collective. Everyone is their family and they protect each other. Their status is based on beauty (whoever is prettier between the two mates, regardless of gender, is the one with more power.) Because of this, the society is traditionally a matriarchal society. Currently (or rather, when Daron is this current age), the Queen and head of their society is a Swan named Marellethia. She is an ancient, however, and her beauty has slightly faded. Most of the power in the society is held by the Prince Cristatus (Chris, who, incidently, is a peacock... lmao!) He's considered more beautiful then the Queen, so he holds more power. However, he's only 14 and though he's extremely bright (if not suffering from a slight Narcissist complex), he does not have enough experiance to rule alone. There is a parliament, formed of several elders, all of which are birds of prey (ie, falcons, hawks, eagles, owls, etc.) They influence the Prince's decisions, though the decisions are his final choices on the issues. He looks to them for guidence and considers them parents (again, anyone older than you is basically like a parent. Children are born from large eggs, often in the same nests with children from different bird breeds and different parents. The actual blood parents will take care of their own, as well as any other children born in their nests, regardless of breed. It's kinda cool!) However, most of all decisions are made with one goal in mind: the preservation of the Alaef race. No interbreeding with other spiecies!!

An interesting fact about the Alaefs... the way they reach maturity--go through puberty, if you will--is by going through a long and painful rite of passage in which they see their own death. Sucks, don' it? Basically, it starts with a wave of overwellming emotions. Alaefs, who are usually calm, reserved people, suddenly become out of control and are confined to a small room. There, their wings are litterally sawed off, and they sit in their pool of blood for a week or longer, until their wings grow back. They are not fed and their screams are completely ignored. The idea is that they will understand what it is to truly be mortal, without wings and without their regenerative powers... They feel alone, forgotten, abandoned and completely cut off from their collective race. If the ordeal doesn't kill them, they see a vision of what will. They see it in depth and it is a secret they must keep until it happens. For if they do not die the way they had forseen, they will never reach the afterlife and they will become hurtful spirits. The stress of the whole ordeal bleaches their hair white (all mature adult Alaefs have white hair) and lighter skin. Their wings grow back like normal (they don't change color) but the whole ordeal leaves them rather quiet and wise of the world (another reason that Alaefs are not considered vain.) Infant and children Alaefs (who have not gone through the rite) are literally immortal. They cannot be killed until they have their vision. And the whole rite can occur at anytime, at any age. As a rule of thumb... the younger you are when you go through it, the younger you'll be when you die, although this doesn't always apply. Daron went through it when he was 11. Incidently, the Prince has not gone through this ritual yet, and he's rather vain and hot-headed. Daron's prediction was that he would be murdered. He saw the face of his killer, but he didn't know who it was when he had the vision. He met his killer later (and the killer met Daron, unknowing that it would be by his own hand that such a beautiful creature would die), and it took all the strength he could muster to not say anything about it. (ouch!)

Now, Daron wasn't born in a nest like his kind. His egg was abandoned accidently when the Elf slaves were brought over to the Human realm (some Alaefs were living in the Elfin world... another reason Elves claim to have dibs.) His egg was lost and was eventually picked up by an Elfin slave as she worked in the fields. She took the egg home in her basket and cared for it, understanding what it was. Daron hatched (what a cute little puff ball he was!!) and was raised by this Elfin family, who eventually found their way to the Elfin sanctuary (and free of enslavement). There, Daron was taught as a fighter. He soon began to teach others what he knew and was considered the greatest teacher of the sword since Cerfantril *cough*. However, an Alaef living amongst Elves will not go unnoticed, especially when the Alaef's instincts to find a capable mate kick in. *coughcough* For an Alaef, there is no greater instinct than that to find a mate and begin to breed. It's a goal in their lives, and the stronger their offspring, the more strength to the race as a whole. There can be no greater honor. Now, Daron's instincts were not as strong, due to the fact that he was raised by Elves, but Snowy Owls are rare and it didn't take long for a female snowy owl to find him...

...unfortunetly, snowy owls are so rare, she was his sister.

Normally, Snowy Owls only have one brood but they can have several eggs in a brood. Or, since the Alaefs are humanoid, they can have several broods with only one egg. Daron's sister Nyctea is about thirteen years older than him...

..and a total bitch!

She tries to seduce Daron, but he's not interested. Unlike with Alaefs, Elves don't support incest (with Alaefs, it doesn't matter. Children can be born from different bird races, or within families. The only thing that matters is the fact that the strongest children come from those with parents of the same breed. And with birds of prey, strength is important.) Well, Daron pushes away from her (that and he's not even 20 yet and hasn't quite started thinking about breeding) and Nyctea grudgingly goes off. (She's bigger than him by the way... female snowy owls are larger than males. I've done my homework!)

Basically, Daron eventually gets a crush on Direndria Stormarrow (where have I heard that name before?? lol *points at ~direndria *) and she's an Elf. So far, the Parliament of the Alaefs have left him alone, until he takes a job among the Wing Riders. The Wing Riders are a military organization charged with patroling the area of the Akbroal Mountains, famous for their Dragon and Goblin activity. There are four branches in the Wing Riders. The first is that of the Dragon Riders, who ride the strong, fire-breathing red dragons. (Krianna is a Dragon Rider). Then there are the Griffin Riders, the Winged-Horse riders and the Alaefs. Daron becomes a Captain among them (a fairly high rank) but now that he is among other Alaefs, his feelings for Direndria stop him from getting much farther. He's charged with the duty of training new recruits, instead of actual intense combat. That's fine with him, because Daron's personality doesn't allow him to hurt even a fly. He's a really sweet guy. He takes on a group of teenage rectuits, a mix of males and females, and becomes like a father to all of them. It's really cool!

By the time of my second book, Daron and Direndria's relationship has come to a sort of standstill. Daron realizes that she doesn't love him as much as she should, because, quite frankly, he's not the person she was born to be with (Elves all have one person who they were born to meet and fall in love with. When they see that person the first time, it hits them like a pound of bricks. Thus, the expression "love at first sight") Daron feels a slight separation between them, but he loves her enough to not give up on her. But, in the end, it's not really his decision. All mates have to be approved by the Parliament, and quite obviously, they aren't going to let an Alaef breed with an Elf. The child could be deformed, or imperfect. The birth could kill the mother (when she has to lay an egg!!) or the child... and the worst case!! The child could actually come out all right and it would start a trend that would deteriorate the already rare race!! THE HORROR!!! The Parliament tell Daron to cut it off with Direndria. He does, but Direndria throws a small fit. Daron promises to remain her friend, yadda yadda yadda. Basically, in the same book, she goes off and runs into Morgine, who she IS meant to be with, and Daron's forgotten.

Now this sucks... He returns to his people, but the Prince has made a vital desicion. He beleives that because the Parliament went kind of easy on Daron (instead of openingly punishing him for his blatent fornications with an Elf) they would take away Daron's right to breed. Daron, distraught, goes off. Enter Nyctea. She manages to convince the council to allow Daron to breed, only if it is with her. They agree that a strong child would come out of them being mates, and go along with it. Again, Daron, appalled by this, refuses. Nyctea, thouroughly pissed, goes off and swears that he will never breed!! (Well, duh!)

Don't worry, Daron doesn't go his whole life without love! Erm... this is kinda long though so I think I'll just stop. No use giving good stuff away. And I was getting dangerously close to spoilers... I'm done!!

Presidential debates still going on... Do you realize how long it took me to write all this? Wow, those guys like to talk!

And so do I apparently. Jeeze!! All this info and I didn't even get to talk about Daron's uniform like I'd planned. Oh well. If anyone is interested, go ahead and leave a note and I'll write it up for you. Basically, he's wearing part of his Wing Rider uniform here. Obviously, he isn't wearing the top part... lol

well it's because each one highlights the stages in making a finished pic like this one, but each one is great on its own and has its own features ^_^

nuuuuuu It's GOOD! I love it. DARON HOT *_____*

Why'd you blur it? :\ I full viewed so I could see it sharply...and well I think you could have stood to resize it quite a bit, but aside from that...why blurry ;_;

But I think the cellshading is very good :3 yay!

Blurry? Well, for a few reasons. I was kinda going for that dream-like quality of the picture first of all... and it looked kinda cool blurred out a bit....

...but mostly I didn't like my jagged-y looking lines and wanted to make sure they were more soft... lol

Actually, if you resize it to like 400 or 500 pixels, it should look a lot smoother. And if you want to give it a dream like quality, I recommend merging all the color layers into one, then duplicating the layer, then blurring the copy, and playing with the layer blend modes. it gives a better effect.

The snow was just my airbrush in photoshop, set at a low opacity (like 22% I think) and I would hold the brush down until it got light enough... then I would go over it with a few clicks with a slightly larger brush until I was satisfied. It's a lot of fun actually... the sparkly things are kinda a trademark of mine...

Well thanks! I guess that's as good a complement as any. I kinda went for sadness, since he's probably one of my most tragic characters. He doesn't have a really happy ending. It's good, don't get me wrong, but he's murdered so it's not perfect. He leaves behind a lot of mourners... Yeah, tragic...
