Heh, my chinese is a little rusty. I'm assuming the second character actually means eternal, being shui but lacking the radical to make it water.

That was the idea. I borrowed the notion from the opening sequence of Avatar where they would display two characters behind each element which would translate to something like this:
"Water is adaptable"
"Earth is strong"
"Fire is Feirce"
and "Air is peaceful"
Continuing upon that theme I put in these two characters to say, "Love is eternal"
