Picture done for Dallas' birthday, July 2017.
Continuing with the Star Wars portraits series I figured it was about time that I did one of the longest serving members of the whole saga, everyone's favourite protocol droid, C-3PO.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my usual pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 08 colours.
His head was done with white, black, warm grey 1, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
His body was done with white, Payne's grey, black, warm grey 1, warm grey 4, warm grey 5, warm grey 6.
His arms were done with white, Payne's grey, warm grey 3, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The Tantive IV corridor to the left was done with white, black, warm grey 1, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The corridor to the right and back was done with black, warm grey 1, warm grey 3, warm grey 4 and warm grey 5.
The ceiling was done with white, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.

Completion time: 15 hours 58 minutes

Thanks
A lot easier n grey scale than trying to tackle that golden plating in full colour.
Plus I like the grey work more for this particular collection.
The current one should be posted soon presuming the postal service can get it to Dallas on time. They're already 14 days overdue.

That guy c3po looks a lot like the weird lady bit from Fritz Lang's Metropolis ey

Speaking of Metropolis I am very keen on the Bohemian Rhapsody movie! Hav not been this giddy for a movie in years \(^o^)/

Well, when you look at McQuarrie's original concept drawings for Star Wars, he did take inspiration from Metropolis for some of the designs.
Yep, we're both looking forward to Bohemian Rhapsody as well!

It would've taken so much longer in colour. That golden plating would take ages to get just right with the light reflections.
As I've said to others, there are some errors but they don't seem to show.

Starfire-Productions In reply to ginnyj [2017-07-27 16:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
Well, greyscale images take a lot less time because you can hide more in the basic shades.
If this had been colour I'd be looking at closer to 50 because of the light reflections in 3PO's body.
As I've said on comments below, there are a couple of mistakes but I think I'm the only one who can see them - lol

ginnyj In reply to Starfire-Productions [2017-07-31 23:25:37 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!
That's true, now that you mention it... I also spend much more time on colored drawings, but still even just 15 hours for a black and white drawing is fast for me, I usually spend well over 20 hours on those and yours look so great with half of that time!
Don't worry, I really can't spot the mistakes you're talking about, they must be only obvious to you.

I like the challenge in coloured pencil art but something about the subtleties of grey scale is just very relaxing.
Takes me back to pencil and ink work I used to do years ago.
Well, it's just practice and my speed challenges have really helped a lot.
That's good. An artist is always their own worst critic

ginnyj In reply to Starfire-Productions [2017-08-08 20:15:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're right about that... I find drawing with graphite especially soothing.
What do you mean, speed challenges? Like, you set a time when you've got to finish your art or something?

Haha totally. It's rare for an artist to be completely satisfied with their own work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starfire-Productions In reply to ginnyj [2017-08-08 21:48:37 +0000 UTC]

Haven't done purely graphite work for ages. I like the greyscale stuff I get with the polychromos.
Its a small palette of 17 colours but I rarely use them all in a single piece.

Yes, I set myself tasks. Draw one character in 5 hours or less. Draw 2 with basic background in 7 hours or less. Draw one with complex background in 10 hours or less.
I chose the Star Wars animated style to test myself because it's something I'm very familiar with and I enjoy a lot.
The resulting effect on my portrait works has been amazing.

Ah, but when you get that 'magic piece' that ticks all the boxes, it's awesome

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ginnyj In reply to Starfire-Productions [2017-08-15 18:19:04 +0000 UTC]

I've never tried polychromos, how is it? But you still can create really great art with a small palette in my experience.

That's a nice challenge... I might just try it someday. Maybe it'll motivate me to get my drawings done faster (because I tend to procrastinate a lot haha). Yeah, you draw such amazing pieces in such a short amount of time, it amazes me.

You're right! It's awesome when that happens, even if not often, which makes it even more worth it.

Starfire-Productions In reply to ginnyj [2017-08-16 13:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Polychromos pencils are awesome.
I know a lot of artists tend to use these or the prismacolour pencils.
I took 6 months just experimenting with them to see what I could do. By changing nib shape and pressure you can get a good colour range from each pencil so that really opens up your options.
They have a nice oily finish and you can layer and blend them quite well.

Well, it's certainly worked for me. I keep doing them when I have the time but currently have a lot of more complex projects to finish.
If you look back at some of my older pieces it was quite common to spend over 100 hours on one.

Indeed, it's not often that it happens but when it does....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ginnyj In reply to Starfire-Productions [2017-08-23 13:54:31 +0000 UTC]

I didn't know that! See, just as you said, most people recommend prismacolor so that's what I use most of the time too. But I guess I'll have to give polychromos pencils a try some of these days, they seem worth it.

Yeah, it must also help people who tend to procrastinate (like I do) I guess. But you're right that you get faster the more you practice, that's true.

Yes, it feels like such a treat!

Well, they seem to be the two big names in coloured pencils and most folks tend to settle on one type.
I was introduced to Polychromos so that's what I went with. I now have a complete set after 7 years - lol.

It keeps me going for sure. Having time for projects for yourself is a luxury but now I'm getting faster, I have that time

Indeed, almost as good as an artist's fuel snaccident

Starfire-Productions In reply to ginnyj [2017-08-24 11:04:40 +0000 UTC]

I was working on the fact that pencils are numbers 1 - 283 so I assumed there were 283 colours.
Then I find out there are only 120, yet I have 126 colours. So, full set and then some.

Well, sometimes it's nice to be able to do pictures for yourself, it breaks up the work load.

I had one this morning, 2 quadruple chocolate cookies were sacrificed

That's nice, at least, you have a lot of choice with the pencils at this point, having a full set.
It certainly does!
Haha I'm sure the chocolate cookies were worth being sacrificed.

Indeed. It doesn't happen often but it's nice when it does.

Well, I haven't had any this month. After working on a project with a fellow artist and things had to be very specific, I promised her I wouldn't have any chocolate for a fortnight
