Description Kimono shoot that was for a still life/magazine project - this was used for the front cover

you will see in a bit why I especially did a fashion shoot for a still life project.

I warn you, anyone calling her a Geisha will be hit squarely around the head. She is wearing a kimono. That does NOT make her a geisha and I am not attempting to portray her as one.

It's refreshing to see some non-Asian beauty in Japan's traditional clothing. I am a lover of kimono (i'm american) and I just love this shot. I love the light makeup that she is wearing, it fits in nicely with the portrait. Her hair is just a wonderful touch!!! It softens up the whole image, while making it pop.

What a wonderful photograph. It is so beautiful. Very crisp eri, too

Thankyou!

If I had the money I'd happily collect lots of kimono, I love them so much!
I just need to learn to tie an obi properly. I tried my best to do a barrel knot but I know I did something wrong cause it snapped the stitching on part of the obi - need to repair it when I can.

The model did the makeup but we planned it to tone with the gold obi used in the shoot

thankyou again

Oh there are plenty of obi tying resources online; I'm sure you will get the hang of it. I learned, myself, just by studying illustrations over & over. I also made my own variations to the plump sparrow knot and vertical arrows.

You'll get better in time.. just takes practice! XD

lol I used some of them but just couldn't follow some of it. I think i should get some more of the ties to use for tying the knot because I ended up using whatever like silk scarves for the temporary ones that don't stay in the knot. have you see ichiroya.com?

Oh, i've been using ichiroya for years. But i usually use yamatoku --- they are really really good, great prices and fast shipping! [link]

You wont be disappointed.

ties for tying the knot... do you mean koshihimo? the temporary ties, and/or the ones you use to hold up the obi far on the back?

For koshihimo I use this stuff that I get at walmart... its in the quilt /ribbon/curtain tie section on big rolls. I just put super glue on each end to keep it from fraying, and then I cut it to whatever length I need. Because it is really thick/heavy/strong cotton, it will NOT slip. It's plain white, but no one sees your koshihimo anyways!

It works REALLY good for me, and it is CHEAP!

I only have one *real* koshihimo that I received as a *gift* when I ordered a yukata from sakuramarket. I prefer my homemade ones!

For the scarf that is used to cover up the obi makura (pillow) I use regular scarves, like you buy at walmart, or dillards, or that maybe your grandma used 40 years ago. haha. They work just as well. And for obi jime, I don't have any of those that are real either, I just use whatever I have handy XD

ahh cool - I got my juban etc from ichiroya and found the kimono on ebay

and yeah those XD I know alot of the names for the parts but it was a while since I was tying the kimono and researching them so some of them have slipped my mind - I have a terrible memory lol

alas, I'm in the UK so no walmart but i know the stuff you mean and I know where I can get some
I used a normal silk scarf for the obi-age as it is though a real one might be nice to get. and I have a plum coloured obi-jime I never quite know what to do with the ends of the obi-jime once I've tied it - I just kinda tuck them under itself lol.
It's just like a huge, stiff shoe-lace in texture - some upholstery edgings might work really well if you're careful which ones you pick - you don't want one too thick as the shape of a real one is wide and flat (like a shoelace as I said)
