Local PD was already waiting for us by the time we made it past the horde of military officials filing into the space elevator complex. It was only just one guy with one vehicle, though. Think his name was Jefferies or… something. Whatever. This was all just so weird. Supposedly Sergeant Sandover and Corporal Al-Fulani had done things like this before but more so on part of the Sergeant. Seemed to be the usual type of operations Captain Vassão ran. Still, it was a new world for me to be on mission during what people consider "normal, everyday life". Sure, I served on base for a while before being deployed but that was back when I was a Marine. We weren't tracking down HVIs in their apartment buildings. Most exciting thing we got to do was test-drive warthogs for servicing.
The ride over is pretty boring. Gave me time to write this at least. Fabrice-Lance Corporal Vega- is cracking jokes about saluting all the brass back at the complex and asking Sandover for a fast food pit stop. Farrah isn't saying much and Sandover is ready to pull out the paddle. Me? I can't help but stare out the window and look at all the people on their phones or their datapads. Kids playing in the park. People going to or from work, home, wherever. It's like they don't know that less than a week ago the four of us in this truck thought we were going to die from a Covenant invasion. This can't be real. How can life be so normal here? So untouched by the war raging across the galaxy? I don't know if I can really put it into words, what I'm feeling. Then again, maybe I wouldn't understand their point of view. It's been a long five years of service. I don't really even know how I made it this long.
The Sergeant is giving us a recap of the mission briefing just to make sure we're all clear. I think she's referring to Fabrice and I considering this would be our first op like this. I didn't forget though. We're actually the "B-Team", here to pick this guy up who wasn't at the first known location. Apparently he was on the far side of town, away from his family. Dunno what he'd be doing out here but then again I'm not well versed in the lifestyle of 'corporate drone'. Either way, we had the easy job. Only picking up one guy but had to make it quick and clean. Shouldn't be too hard.
I couldn't think of much else to put in here but we're rolling up to the HVI's location now. Maybe I'll have more to write on the way back since this should go smoothly.
