Description This piece gets remarked on more than I give it credit for; it's kind of the stepchild of my portfolio--it's been on my website for a solid two years now, but I've never uploaded it here (unless I accidentally put it somewhere I can't readily find...which is possible...) I suppose probably because I'm not entirely sure where it came from, but the idea had been with me for quite some time before I actually made it. I don't usually do political-y stuff, but here we go!

Anyway, my overextended metaphor goes thusly: Megaloceros (or the Irish Elk, as it's more commonly called) are believed to have gone extinct because of their impressive but unwieldily antlers making it difficult for them to flee predators. So...dependence on oil makes for a bustling civilization, but the over-dependence crash is bound to come. Or something like that.

Incidentally: this was done roughly the same time as those real-media mimic horses like cloud-horse and wood unicorn and the embroidery one. This one was mimicking silkscreen halftone dot prints.

Wow! This is quite amaising! I can imagine how ground are shaking under oil rigs and what stands up. It's like god of dying nature

O.o

It is a shame that this piece is so much less refined than the rest of your gallery, because it really stood out to me. It's a great concept, and a truthful one.

Eh, it was never meant to be 'refined' I guess in the sense you're using the word. It was more an experiment than anything.

Never the less. The thumbnail just stares at you from your gallery with those creepy, accusing, truthful eyes... so, I still like the piece.

it kind of remeinds me of a discussion we had in one of my college english classes about oil in alaska, near or in a reserve. there was a photo in our book of some elk walking under a masaive pipe.

I always wonder if the wildlife are really bothered by those pipes or not.

most likely not. some critters take things like that to thier advantage. so long as it dosnt compleatly destroy the environment

I plant enough trees every year for it to be OK for me to love this. XD

Guhhhh I got massively excited when I saw this in my inbox. Political art usually bores me (love the topic, but the art is never inventive or powerful enough), but this is different. The colours give off the right mood and the tie-in between nature and humanity is a pretty strong metaphor. I'm also a nerd for evolution and extinct species, so the reference to the elk gets extra brownie points from me!

It's very rare I get to say this (it seems to be a buzzword in every crit/comment these days), but it's a genuinely great concept. Would be nice to see a larger, refined version of this, though I do like the simplicity of it (especially in regards to the halftone dot mimicry). Just a shame it's been hidden from dA for two years!

Hmm, never thought about redoing this one bigger, but it's not a half bad idea. I'll have to add it to the never-ending projects list
