What Are You Getting At?
Chapter 0:
You Are Here
Word Count: 2,299

“When was the last time you did anything, Kaito?!” A voice boomed out from one of the clean wooden hallways that lead between the basement and the upstairs part of the average house, decorated by mostly bright colors and, well, wooden flooring. Cutely pouting, a girl stood with her arms crossed, her black boot tapping against the unsoiled ground. Her long turquoise hair was held in one long ponytail that went past her bottom, her body covered by a black and blue skirt, while the hair nearly touched the ground. Curious yet angered azure eyes stared at another man who seemed to be going by the blue code as well, her frustration practically showing in her now cherry red colored face. This was perhaps the fifth time in the month that she had to yell at the lazy male for not doing much of anything at all and to be quite frank; she had grown fed up with it.

Miku Hatsune was used to doing a lot of work, after all, she was one of the most popular singers in the whole company for VOCALOID which had grown widely in popularity since it's debut. The group of singers, steadily growing bigger as the days went by, usually had their hands tied. Even though all of them as friends decided on various things, she usually was called to help out with the bigger things in a music group. Planning out tours, or maybe signing autographs, making sure their music lyrics were completely memorized: memorized to a T. On top of that she had her own house to handle. Washing the dishes, dusting shelves, sweeping the floor and cleaning those hard to reach areas. She found herself catching a couple of winks on the job and could only giggle in embarrassment, providing her own self-defense afterward before quickly getting back on job again.

Though, that never meant she had to put up with slothful charades on her own.

Ever since her best friend and not to mention fellow singing partner (because they usually performed duets), Kaito Shion, had gotten his house burned down, Miku had felt sorry for him. Not that she was obligated to do this, but she felt comfortable with letting the usually cheerful man stay with him. From his friendly smile down to his unnecessary winter attire, you could tell Kaito could be a blast to be around. After all, they had known each other for such a long period of time that Miku can't even remember the days when they never hung out. They always seemed to get into something together. On top of that, he usually knew just the words to say to help cheer anyone up and seemed to be pretty selfless when it came to situations. But after awhile, all of that began to change. It seemed like her previous energetic buddy had turned into her new amazing couch potato in a matter of weeks. And for the life of her she couldn't figure out what would cause him to go into such a depressing looking state. First she wanted to blame another singer, who was named Meiko.

Meiko looked pretty sweet from the outside, brown hair that held a curving bang to the left on her face, making her left eye slightly covered in a slightly shy person style. The hair only when down to about her neck, so she usually didn't change styles on it but so many times, save for maybe changing the bangs or going to see another friend, Lily, who wasn't so bad with working with the short locks of hair. She had cute honey brown eyes that usually shouted some sort of innocence into the world, making her seem like the greatest girl to walk the earth. Not to mention her soft peach skin complexion, long legs that looked sexy to many of the men around. It wasn't like they weren't revealed, she wore a short red skirt and a similar red tube top all the time. Whenever Miku was around, Meiko was usually hanging around Kaito, telling him something that would make him laugh or something that would make him look confused. The blue haired girl was sure they had to be dating in secret and she knew that neither one would lie to her if she asked, so being closest to Kaito, she had asked him one day only to receive a rather exaggerated no. Despite that rather odd answer, she over looked it and figured that they honestly never dated.

So they weren't dating. But he still told Meiko everything about him, and she did the same back. So maybe she would know what was going on with the odd VOCALOID singer.

With a sigh, Kaito turned his head considering where he was sitting on the couch he couldn't even see Miku's face. He had medium blue hair, and azure eyes, that stared back into Miku's own beautifully blue eyes in his opinion. Though he'd never say a word of that to her unless he wanted to get smacked into the wall. He wore a blue scarf around his neck, a long white coat with blue lines along the coats edges. On his legs were dark pants that seemed to be a blueish-gray color, they led down into long blue boots. Shion was rather lucky that there was no warm weather to endure, or he'd be force to change out of his winter attire which he seemed to do only if Miku or Meiko insisted it. Raising a softly peach toned hand to her, he stood up from the couch and made his way over to the shorter girl, leaning down to poke her head.

“How many times do I have to tell you?” He mumbled in a joking tone, a cute smile on his face as he strides past her. “I was going to cover all my chores. But you can't rush me, I'm going, I'm going.” Briefly, before leaving the room, he held onto one of the side walls and stared at Miku. Her body signs alone showed that she was pissed with his laziness, or at least that's what she claimed it to be, but he wouldn't share the same opinion. Kaito really just wasn't feeling very well, and even he didn't understand why at the moment and her slightly violent nature never helped him any further to figure anything out. Never would he hold it against her, but he wishes she would be more supportive of him at least if she wants some help with getting the house cleaned. Who wants to help a person who only yells and puts down all of their work? No one, and that was the conclusion that the taller male was sticking to as his hand slipped from the wall and he made his way down the wooden hallway. His first destination being the kitchen.

The smaller VOCALOID singer stared after him with a annoyed look. She couldn't believe how 'seriously' he took things, poking her head and laughing like nothing happened. If Miku had the heart to do it, she probably would have told him to get himself a new house as soon as possible and get the hell out of hers and/or run over to Meiko's but that usually wouldn't be anything for her to say. Noticing the other blue haired male's disappearance towards the kitchen, she frowned and followed after him. Maybe she looked a little too harsh. He didn't even stay to hug her and ask her if she was feeling okay, perhaps because of the obvious that he was feeling like a piece of crap. If only she could take back all the things that she's been saying to him lately, he'd probably forgive her. Though that was impossible, after all, the young girl couldn't go back in time.

However, before she got to properly follow him, the blue and white cellphone in her pocket started to ring. The song was a cute kitty meowing to an electric beat that soon escalated into soft drumming and faded as it repeatedly rang, the volume increasing with each attempted call. Pulling the phone out of her pocket, she glanced to the caller ID and smiled a little. Len Kagamine was written there in white letters, a picture showing a blonde boy with a peculiar short hairstyle waving at her and winking one of his blue eyes towards her. He had on a white t-shirt and a yellow bag wrapped around his body with a couple of comic books sticking out. With a little giggle behind the memory of the picture, she clicked the green button with a phone icon and held the communication device close to her ear. Len probably had something to say that would cheer her up anyhow, he always did, similar to how Kaito seemed to. “Hello? Miku here.”

The blonde had been impatiently tapping a white boot covered foot against the hard concrete pavement, a white phone with yellow banana casing up by his ear. This wasn't an urgent call, but he hated waiting for things. It was just not in his description and more often than not, Miku had him waiting for a few seconds. He wondered what she was doing when she did that, debating to answer his phone call or not? Shaking his head at the rather unnecessary thoughts roaming throughout his head, he smiled at the familiar soft voice of Miku Hatsune, his childhood friend. They used to go to camp together, summer camp, a couple of years back. He always found himself admiring her singing voice when they rode on the bright yellow buses that took them towards the camp. She often started up the singing that erupted through the whole bus, kids of all ages joining her merrily without a second thought. It was a great sight, if he did say so his self. “Hey Miku.” Len answered as he ran a hand through the spiky blonde hair of his, grinning. “How are you? You sound like you and Kaito got into it again. What's the score for the week? You guys totally act like a married couple.”

Miku blushed and shook her head viciously, even though he wouldn't see her gestures. A married couple?! Her and Kaito couldn't be married if Kaito and her never did anything and he never got off his butt anymore! She pouted once her shocked spell was over as she soon heard his loud laughter echo through the speaker of the phone, eyes rolling to the side. “Whatever, Len. That's not even what happened. Me and Kaito didn't, 'get into it', okay? We had a small debate that he hardly participated in and he still hasn't worked at finding a new house to stay in. That's all that happened.” Deciding she wanted to be more comfortable, she walked over to the couch Kaito was previously occupying and laid across it on her stomach, a leg in the air and the other laying flat against the soft furniture. One hand lifted and a finger twirled around a lock of blue hair, eyes staring up at the ceiling as she awaited his reply and only a bigger pout came to her face as she heard it.

“Miku, you and Kaito get into it every month now.” The boy snickered, leaning against the vending machine that was nearby where he was. Their town often had cool vending machines placed into the ground, it made it easier on the workers he figured. Maybe too many people crowded stores nowadays. “Every time I call you, something between you two happened. But really, all jokes threatening to leave my damned mouth aside, what's up between you guys? I heard that Meiko and Kaito haven't spoken too much to each other lately either. She seems pretty down today, I just left her place.” His eyes glanced up towards the clear blue sky, the white clouds seeming to shift as slowly as ever.

With a huff, Miku whined back to Len. “Look Len, if Kaito was staying with you and Rin, you'd understand. A couch potato is really a drag! I feel bad for him and everything but the least he could do now is help me clean up a little bit. Whenever we invite people over here it turns into a mess. And Meiko? I just spoke to her yesterday, she said she was doing fine. Whatever happened must have happened today but how can it have anything to do with Kaito? I know I didn't hear him talk on the phone and as much as I know, he probably didn't go out to meet her...” A small venomous tone came to her voice as she questioned her one of her best friends, “Did he?”

Another laugh boomed through the phone speakers and Miku stayed silent through it, waiting for it to calm down. It eventually does and gentle silence settles between the two before Len decides answer, his tone slightly more serious. That was odd for him too, when Len was serious, there was something to worry about most likely. A whispered question and the drop of the cellphone. Kaito rushed into the room at the sound of hearing something crash, looking at the surprised girl laying across the couch, her hand held in an odd position. It looked like she was previously holding the phone, however it laid down against the ground. “What happened?!” The taller man worriedly rushed to her, placing a hand on top of her shaking one in the crooked position. There was no response from the blue-eyed girl, instead, she looked up at Kaito's face, hearing those words repeat in her head.

“I could be a better man, if you wanted me to be.”
