So I was going through my messages and such when I encountered something I hadn't before: adoptables.

What are adoptables? I mean... it looks like you design something and then sell it to a person? But what are the rules of use and whatnot? Can you do whatever you want with the drawing that you adopt?

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to that part of the art community.

Adoptables are character designs which are created by the artist. Some of them are based on a fandom, such as My Little Pony or Steven Universe, and some are original creations. Whether original or fandom based, adoptables can be human, creature, animal, anthro/furry, or a unique species that the artist has created.

When an artist creates a unique species, they can choose to label it "open" or "closed." An open species means that any other artist can create a character themselves but have it be the same species that the artist originally created. For example, an artist creates a species that is the mixture of a cat and koi fish. Another artists likes the species and wants to make one similar, but wants to make it like a beta or goldfish instead. Because it is an "open species" this new artist is free to do so because the original artist has given permission for others to use the idea or design.

However, a "closed species" is when an artist creates a design or series of designs and other people must gain use of this type of adoptable either through an adoptable auction by the original artist, commission the original artist to create a unique version, or pay the original artist a fee to create their own. Sushidogs are an example of a closed species adoptable.

Adoptables are sold either via auction or sale for a set price. Auctions are won via either "autobuy" or bids that gradually increase, sometimes surpassing the original autobuy price, similar to how ebay runs their auctions. After a buyer has won, they must pay the artist. Some artists have a certain time period in which a winner/buyer must pay before they lose ownership of the adoptable. An artist will list what they want as payment. The more common methods of payment are deviantart points, other website exclusive currency (such as gold on Gaia, sugarstars on Goatlings, etc), bitcoin, and PayPal.

After ownership takes place, a new owner can do what they want with the character... usually. The rules of adoptables are generally similar, but it's best to consult an adoptable seller's terms of use/service. Some limit the reselling of the adoptable, others do not and others only allow you to gift the adoptable away rather than sell it. Some limit how much you can change the character's design, others allow you to change the design freely. If an artist doesn't list a terms of use/service, it's best to ask them any questions before bidding or buying.

Usually, though, the new owner is allowed to use the character for roleplay, commissioning other artists, etc.

I've found that fan art of adoptables is generally welcome, even if you do not own the character. If you were to make fan art, a way to credit would be to credit the original artist as the designer and the new owner as the owner of the adoptable.
