Xol's clown makeup was honestly not supposed to look that horrifying, just messy and badly-applied...but anything clowns touch turns to horror, it seems.

I dunno about the clown thing, though. The first halloween I remember, my dad went along with as a clown.

Huh...perhaps your dad is the magical exception to the "clowns are horrifying" rule. Perhaps he's good enough at face-painting not to look like Pennywise.
A (Zu)bat costume is by far the best costume choice if you already have wings to work with.
