Description Jane has not had any news from Mr Rochester since she ran away from Thornfield Hall after her non-wedding - finally, she goes to find news of him, only to realize that Thornfield Hall has burned down, and Rochester is now blind and crippled - but also a legitimate widower.

He now lives in his father's former hunting abode, a much more modest house than Thornfield, hidden deep in a wood. Jane leaves the carriage at the nearest village and walks the rest of the way on foot - it is evening, sullen skies and drizzly rain, and the path through the thick forest winds on and on until she fancies she's lost her way - when she finally sees the house, and Mr Rochester, hatless and disoriented, just stepping out of it to get some air. She halts her steps, almost as if she was afraid to be discovered...

Here via the link from The Illustrated Word. What a wonderful entry this is! Your painting is delightful and I like how you've presented it in the scope of the story.

I just finished Jane Eyre earlier ago, and I cried inside when I read over this particular part in the story. This is one of my favourite scenes in the book, as well as the scene with the fortune-telling (I was just as surprised as Jane when the gypsy turned out to be Mr. Rochester) and the scene where Jane announced that she and Mr. Rochester were equals.

Hi, yes, it is a fantastic book. And this is also one of my favourite scenes - along with pretty much all the others I've chosen to illustrate.
Glad you like the painting! And many thanks for the fave.

PS: i finally finished Jane Eyre!
IT ROCKED MY SOCKS. beats anything Jane Austen ever wrote ever.

Nah, I don't think it *beats* Jane Austen, it's just wholly different.

Thanks for the fave!

PS so have you read Ursula Le Guin?

yeesh. i've never liked Jane Austen. she's... wordy. and i'm not REALLY into girly novels.
oh! but i did like "Northanger Abbey".

Ursula Le Guin? no i don't think i have!

They're not girly novels! They're sharply observed comedies of human manners. (gee that sounded posh didn't it?)

Have you read "Emma"? "Pride and Prejudice"?
How can you not like Pride and Prejudice... :shakes head:

Try Ursula Le Guin though. They are also - among other things - sharply observed comedies of human manners, but a bit more up to date than Jane Austen, I'll give you that.

(Jane Eyre is in a class of its own though, I agree)

ha ha! "sharply observed comedies of human manners". i love it!
hey now- i liked the Pride and Prejudice movie! i guess i just didn't have the patience for the book. she's very... talkative.

but i have read Emma. it's okay. Northanger Abbey is still my favorite of hers though.
what has Ursula Le Guin written? er... or is that the name of the book?

Ursula Le Guin is the author.

I like the Earthsea series, especially The Tombs of Atuan and Tehanu. If you like Jane Eyre you ought to like Tehanu... I think. But it's better if you've read the other three Earthsea books before, or at least Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore.

She's also written some great science fiction books - The Left Hand of Darkness, The Lathe of Heaven, The Dispossessed... (the last one I haven't actually read myself yet but everyone says it's their favourite, so...)

i've always wanted to read Earthsea! but they never seem to have it at the bookstores... and which one is the first in the series anyways?
Tehanu? sounds mystical!

have you read anything by Cornelia Funke? (i'm currently re-reading Inkheart)
i love books. when i was little, i used to say that when i'd grow up i would have a library like the one that was in The Beauty and the Beast...
Tolkien rocks. C.S. Lewis is good too.
Ooh! And Garth Nix! And Charles Dickens! And Neil Gaiman!

er... but not Twilight.

How come they don't have Earthsea at the bookstores? That's pathetic if you ask me. Have you tried a used bookstore?

The order of the series is as follows:
A Wizard of Earthsea
The Tombs of Atuan
The Farthest Shore

(20 year gap)

Tehanu

(another 10 year gap)

Tales from Earthsea (collection of shorter stories)
The Other Wind

The gaps refer to when the books were written - the first trilogy 1968-1972, Tehanu in 1992 I think, the last two in 2001. But that doesn't have to worry you, they're all out now!

Or try the local library... they're usually listed in "juvenile fiction" which is just ridiculous. "Tehanu" is most definitely not a kid's book. Neither are the rest of them, really!

Yeah, I've read some Dickens, and Narnia...I'm not a big fan of C.S.Lewis though, guess his worldview is, ahem, a bit too different from mine. Haven't heard of Cornelia Funke, haven't read Garth Nix or Neil Gaiman.

I find that I really do tend to like books written by women better, on the whole. So maybe I should try Cornelia Funke!

there's a very good used bookstore here... i should try looking for it.

there's a few things with C.S. Lewis that i disagree with, but overall i think he was a brilliant man. have you ever read his "Out of the Silent Planet" series? i like it better than Narnia. even better is "The Great Divorce".

You'd like Cornelia Funke. Try reading "Inkheart". She's a very real, rich author.

i love all of your work! i just went through your gallery.
have you ever read "Roverandom" by J.R.R. Tolkien. i think you could do some amazing illustrations for that story.
i love all of your Jane Eyre paintings. it makes me want to go read the book. i've only watched the old movie.
you're wonderful!

awwwww...

Glad you like my paintings!

I've read most of what Tolkien's written and has been published, including some non-Middle-Earth stories, not sure if Roverandom was one of them though (I know I have read Leaf by Niggle)

My next illustration project is some images for the Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin though, I'm in love with Ged and Tenar - have you read them? "Tehanu" has got to be the best love story since Jane Eyre.

Can't wait to go on holiday and take my sketchbooks and SKETCH!

<-- for you

Roverandom was a bedtime story Tolkien wrote for his son. very few people have read it, but it's sweet and beautiful. it's like Peter Pan, you know? whenever you read it you feel happy and sad at the same time.
i've heard of Earthsea but i've never read it. hmm... no, i can't say i've heard of "Tehanu" either.

yay sketch!
