Chapter 3

     “Star...? STAR?!” my sister’s voice broke from worry. I desperately wanted to answer, comfort her and say,
“Everything’s alright.” But I couldn’t. I didn’t speak and I wasn’t about to fill Sky with false hope. I sat up and looked around my dreary kitchen, with its cream walls and cupboards; the wooden table and its four chairs hiding in the corner; the burgundy curtains that hung around the big window opposite that door.

     I was so deep in thought that I didn’t realise that I was being helped up. My train of thought disappeared as two long arms wrapped around me. I looked up and Tom was carrying me up to stairs. Sky was following close behind. She was mumbling to herself, I caught a couple of words like ‘school’ and how I might have to stay off. Tom set me gently on my bed and knelt beside me; holding my left hand. I hadn’t realised before, but Tom’s eyes were like two pools of liquid sapphire. I lay there staring into his eyes and sub-consciously began leaning towards him.

     It wasn’t until Sky cleared her throat that I realised how close I was to Tom. I looked away quickly and blushed a bright pink. Tom leaned towards me and whispered in my ear,
“You look cute when you blush.” I blushed a deep red and hid my face in my pillows. I heard Tom chuckle as he brushed my neck with his hand.
“Star, show me what you saw.” Sky said breaking the uncomfortable silence. I held out the pictures. Sky took them and examined them closely.
“Do you know who they are? Or why they are coming?” I shook my head once and looked up at Tom’s confused face.
“What you mean ‘why they are coming?’ ” Tom asked. His eye brows furrowed in thought. I nodded at Sky in encouragement. She nodded back in agreement and turned to Tom.
“We don’t know why or how, but Star can see the future. We think that what she sees only affects her, but we can’t be sure.

     “I know it’s hard to believe let alone understand. Think of the picture Star drew
of you. She drew that two days before you moved-”Sky stopped there to catch her breath and give Tom some time to process the new information.
“Shouldn’t you tell-” Tom began but was interrupted by Sky.
“NO!” she shouted harshly.
“If anyone was to know they’d take Star away and do tests on her. You have to promise -No- Swear on your life you won’t tell anyone!” Sky threatened in a slow voice, making sure Tom got every word clearly.
“I-I can’t do that.” Tom said. He was worried Sky might do something to him. I glared at him, and he smiled weakly back.
“Why?” Sky snapped. We made eye contact and I tried to warn her about Tom’s anger problems. However she looked away too soon to receive my message.

     “It’s complicated...”Tom replied carefully.
“Try me.” Sky used the same tone as before.
“Star?” Tom turned to me and I nodded in response.
“Do you remember the beautiful man with the red eyes?” Tom continued. I shuddered at the thought of the beautiful man.
“Did you see what saved you?” I could see where Tom was headed. Could he really be the Giant Chocolate Brown Wolf of my latest nightmare?
I stared up at Tom with questioning eyes. He just nodded sheepishly.
“WHAT?! What is he talking about?!” Sky questioned; the worry returning in her voice. I stood up and crossed the room to my desk. I held up a picture of Tom and a picture of a giant chocolate brown wolf. The Tom said,
“They...are both me...”
