Description For those who hike below Grand Canyon’s rims, views of the Colorado River are not as common as might be expected.
For example, hiking to the bottom via the spectacular South Kaibab Trail, one does not see the river until this point known as The Tipoff -  over a 5mi / 8km hike from the rim.
From here, a hiker has a steep 1 1/2mi / 2km descent to the river through the canyon's Inner-gorge.
The final section of the Bright Angel Trail can be seen snaking its way along the river 1000ft / 315m below the hikers.
The Cheops Pyramid and Isis Temple tower above on the plateau.
On the very far lower right, a few of the multitude of green cottonwood trees shading the Bright Angel Campground (prior NPS permit required to stay there) can be spotted.
For those hiking the South Kaibab, the campground and the close-by Phantom Ranch are the ultimate goals.
