Description
Our first night in Cianwood was not a particularly restful one. The local Nurse Joy had told us where we could find the Pharmacy that had Jasmine’s medicine, but she also told us that most of the town was over-run with thugs who were using their Pokémon to terrorize the citizens.
“What’s our plan of attack,” Leif asked in the morning.
“We have to stay together,” I explained, “Have your Pokémon ready at all times. If we see someone causing trouble, we’ll deal with them.”
We didn’t see anything of note until we made it back to the beachfront. There we saw two guys, dressed like karate black belts, menacing over a young kid with a Corsola. The two tough guys had a Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan.
“Hitmonlee, use Hi Jump Kick!”
Hitmonlee rushed and kicked the Corsola into the air.
“Hitmonchan, Thunderpunch!”
Hitmonchan cocked his arm back, the static electricity building in the glove, but before he could launch the attack, his arm was wrapped up by a pair of vines. This interrupting caused the two thugs to turn around to face us, allowing the kid and his Corsola to escape.
“Good work, Rose,” I said to my Bayleef, who still had Hitmonchan by the arm.
“You three shouldn’t be meddling,” the Hitmonlee’s trainer said, “we’ll show you what we do to meddlers. Hitmonlee use Hi Jump Kick!”
“Dracul, come out and use Confuse Ray!”
My Golbat swiftly disabled the Hitmonlee and caused him to crash into the sand.
“Cradily, time for Hidden Power!”
May’s Pokémon built up balls of energy and then released them. The two Fighting-type Pokémon were flattened by the move.
“Now Aerodactyl, finish this with AncientPower!”
The fossil Pokémon fired the jagged rocks at the attackers. With their two Pokémon down, the two thugs began to run away.
“Rose, catch those two!”
Rose’s vines had no problem wrapping themselves around the legs of the two attackers. The fell to the sand, both of them trying to claw away from Rose’s grasp.
“Don’t kill us,” one of them pleaded.
“We have no intention of killing you,” I insisted, “We just want to know what’s going on around here.”
“We weren’t talking to you,” the other said, “we’re talking to him.”
The three of us looked up the seaside cliff where the thug was pointing. On top stood a large man dressed only in a cut-off pair of pants, held up with a black belt. I really wished he had worn a shirt though; I was in better shape than this guy. Beside him stood a Primeape and a Poliwrath.”
“Who are you,” Leif yelled at the man.
“My name’s Chuck. I’m the greatest Fighting-type trainer in the world, and I run this city.”
“So you’re in charge of these thugs,” I asked.
“Thugs is a bit much. I would prefer to call them soldiers.”
“Why are you hurting people,” May demanded.
“I was tired,” Chuck smiled, “tired of being the forgotten one. Tired of being just a Gym Leader on this pathetic speck of land. So when I got the opportunity to improve myself, I took it.”
“Opportunity?”
“Gym Leader,” Leif and I said at the same time.
“That’s right, Gym Leader,” Chuck responded, jumping off the cliff onto the sand, “And I believe that means you’ll want to fight me, Saint.”
“Glad you know who I am.”
“We know everything about you. They’ve been watching you for a long time.”
“Then you should know that I can easily defeat you.”
“Oh can you now? I think Primeape and Poliwrath might have something to say about that.”
“Bring it then,” I said, stepping forward.
“Wait a second,” Leif interrupted, holding his arm in front of me, “I have to ask one more thing first. We ran into a group of Tentacool and Tentracruel on our way here. They said something about having their territory taken from them.”
“We needed more space to train our Poliwrath,” Chuck answered.
“You disturbed their breeding season for your own pathetic gains,” Leif raged, bringing out Striker and Usoki, “Saint won’t have to beat you in battle, because I’m going to.”
“Leif, you really don’t have to,” I reasoned.
“Saint, you forget that I have Gym Badges of my own. I’ve been the third wheel this entire trip. Time for me to earn my keep.”
“If you’re sure,” I replied, taking a step back.
“You think you’re going to beat me,” Chuck roared with laughter, “You’re not even worth my time. Let’s make this quick. Primeape, attack Sudowoodo with Karate Chop, Poliwrath attack Scyther with Bubblebeam!”
“Usoki, block that attack! Striker, counter with Slash!”
Sudowoodo surprisingly caught Primeape’s giant fist between his branched hands. Scyther quickly popped every bubble that came in its direction.
“That was a weak attack anyway,” Chuck screamed, “Poliwrath Surf!”
Poliwrath’s center swirl glowed blue, causing the ocean to produce a giant tidal wave that quickly reached the beach. Sudowoodo stood in front of Scyther, taking the brunt of the attack. However, both Pokémon got washed up against the cliffs.
“Now Primeape, Rock Slide!”
“No!”
Primeape jumped up and rocked the cliff with a single punch. The cliff all but split in two, raining rocks onto the two prone Pokémon at the base. They were soon completely covered.
“Now Saint, are you going to give me a fight or not!?”
“Rose, hit Poliwrath with a Razor Leaf!”
Rose jumped in front of me and filled the air with her attack, knocking back Poliwrath.
“Primeape, attack with DynamicPunch!”
“Oh no you don’t. Dracul, Confuse Ray!”
Now it was Golbat’s turn to be in front, confusing Primeape into crashing mid-attack.
“Get up you two pansies,” Chuck screamed, “both of you use DynamicPunch!”
“Rose, cut them both down with Razor Leaf!”
Chuck’s Pokémon didn’t even get an Onix-length from Bayleef. The attack knocked both Pokémon back down, but Primeape was quickly back up and on the attack.
“Go Primeape, attack again!”
“Dracul, Air Cutter!”
The two Pokémon flew at each other. Dracul struck first. Primeape landed face-down in the sand, blood spurting from its side. I looked up to see Dracul’s right wing covered in blood.
“Primeape!”
“Got off easy,” I finished the sentence, “Rose, Cradily, wrap him up!”
Between Rose’s vines and Cradily’s tentacles, Chuck couldn’t go anywhere. I looked over to the cliffside to see Leif trying his best to move the rocks away from his two buried Pokémon. May and I rushed over to help him. We eventually uncovered Usoki and Striker, but they were in bad shape. Striker’s wing was heavily damaged, and Usoki’s left arm was broken. There was also a significant amount of blood.
“Come on guys,” Leif implored, kneeling beside them, “we’ll get you to Nurse Joy.”
“Leif,” I placed my hand on his shoulder, “they won’t make it.”
It took another minute or two, but both Pokémon slipped into unconsciousness, never to wake up. Leif’s whole body went limp. It’s a miracle he ever stood up from that spot.
May and I took Chuck to the Pokémon Center to hand him over to the authorities.
“What will happen to him,” May asked as we headed back to the beach.
“I don’t know, that’s in the League’s hands. I hope they can gather information from him, and I hope he can find a new purpose.”
May and I helped Leif finish the graves for his two Pokémon. All our Pokémon were visibly upset, not to mention Leif.
“I’m tired of doing this,” I said, “It has to stop.”
