Description
“Are you sure you want to battle, Daisy? I don’t want to injure any of your Pokémon.”
“Sure I’m sure. Go, Scratch!”
“A Meowth, a male one too. This shouldn’t take too long, go Nyara!”
“Scratch, use Scratch!”
“Nyara, end this battle with Attract.”
Nyara sat in place, patiently waiting for the right moment. When that moment came, she half-opened her eyes and tilted her head just so, causing the other Meowth to stop in his tracks.
“Return Scratch. That’s a cheap tactic, Leif!”
“Like I said, I do not gain anything from hurting your Pokémon, so I may as well prevent them from attacking at all.”
“Fine then, next up is Soar!”
Pidgeotto, the Bird Pokémon. This Pokémon is full of vitality. It constantly flies around its large territory in search of prey.
“Well in that case, return Nyara, and go, Ishitu!”
“Soar, use Quick Attack!”
“Ishitu, clip its wing with Rock Throw.”
Ishitu pounded the ground, throwing up a few pebbles, one of which hit Pidgeotto’s wing at just the right spot to throw it off balance, causing it to crash.
“Soar return, go, Blazer!”
“I see your Charmander has evolved, well done. However, I only need one attack to win.”
“Blazer use Ember!”
“Ishitu, Mega Punch!”
Ishitu’s punch cut right through the Ember attack, almost turning into a Fire Punch by the time it hit its target.
Daisy fell to her knees, “Each one of my Pokémon went down in just one attack, but how?”
“Sorry if I injured them, but I must get going now.”
“Wait! Why didn’t you have your Geodude use Magnitude? It certainly knows the attack, right?”
“Yes, Ishitu does know that attack, but that would have been over-kill, particularly if it was a strong Magnitude. Mega Punch works just as well and is quicker, so I went with that attack.”
“I don’t get you. You are obviously good at battling, but you don’t seem to enjoy it or even want to. Yet you certainly have three badges by now, with more to come. If you were serious, you could become League Champion.”
“Everyone must work toward their own goals. I am with Pokémon because it is comfortable for me. All battling does is increase the chance of injuring your friends and partners. I don’t want that, not for myself or even for my greatest enemy. My goal is not to become League Champion, or even to win all of the badges, my goal is find out who I am and where I came from. I travel because traveling can lead me to new places where I might discover something.”
I started to walk away.
“Wait, can you give me any tips for battling Lt. Surge?”
“I didn’t face Lt. Surge, he wasn’t in his Gym. But while you’re in Vermillion, go to the Pokémon Fan Club and tell the President you know me. What you learn there might help you understand what I am doing.”
