Description
Morgan and I descended underground into the belly of the castle. We passed though one, two, three locked gates. Each was guarded by two men. None tried to stop us.
“Where are we going,” I finally had to ask after the final gate.
“To see this,” Morgan answered, turning a corner. On the other side was a rectangular structure, outlined in some kind of black rock I was not familiar with. The middle glowed with a pink-purple hue.
“What is this?”
“It’s a Nether portal,” Morgan said in a slightly scared tone of voice, “this is the cause of all the kingdom’s problems.”
“How can this thing cause problems?”
“On the other side of this portal is the Nether, a parallel dimension in which lives all kinds of evil creatures. Father built it in an attempt to gain a new source of resources. He tried to claim that any area of Nether which could be reached by the castle Nether portal was in the Kingdom of Aurumium. Even my father’s idiotic advisors saw the folly of this plan, but he pressed on. The first man he sent into the Nether never returned. After a repeat performance by the second volunteer, father scrapped the plan. He told the people that the portal had been destroyed, but it wasn’t true. Instead, he had it heavily guarded, day and night.”
“Well, it may have been a stupid idea, but I don’t see what harm it is doing now.”
“The Nether is home to different mobs. Mobs you have never encountered before. They sensed an encroachment into their territory. It seems that they have decided to try to take down the castle in retribution. That is what you ran into when you first arrived. The mobs from this dimension seem to have much respect for the Nether mobs, in particular the mob which has the power to jump between dimensions: the Enderman.”
“The man who I met on the way here, the one who died, he mentioned Enderman. But how are the mobs getting to this dimension? Are they building portals of their own?”
“The Enderman’s powers are becoming enhanced. Nobody is quite sure how, all we know is that they are capable of bringing other mobs with them when they jump dimensions. Like I said, nobody knows for sure, but I have a pretty good theory. But to explain that, I need to tell you another story.”
“Can we at least go back to the surface? It’s kind of creepy down here.”
