It is held up on a pedestal for all to see.
To be admired, they say.
I don't see why.
For it is the biggest killer of all time.

It makes you blind, they say.
So what?
You are blind today,
You will be blind tomorrow,
But hindsight is 20/20.
It tells you to not let it in,
But you do it anyway.
This is the first symptom.

It bites, they say.
Thrashing about inside your head,
Making you do and say every manner of stupid things.
But we are masochists,
We enjoy the pain, even when there is no pleasure.
This is the second symptom.

When you are infected by the virus,
You waste away.
And the scary part is,
Nobody knows when they are infected.
Not until it is too late, that is.

People swear "'till death do us part."
Then they break apart.
They have not broken their vows,
For they are dead inside.
They are but a shell of their former selves,
Wholly infected, cured only by release.

There is no vaccine for this virus.
One can get it over and over.
From the time you are young, to a ripe old age.
And every time you get it, it kills.

And of people who remain infected?
Well,
They have simply found someone who is also dying,
Dying in the exact way,
Dying at the exact same speed as they are.
Then people call it true.

Absolutely,
Maniacally,
Indiscriminately.

It killed me once.
