I would love to believe that the younger man wearing a top hat is Doctor Seward, if only because it suits my mental image of Van Helsing's old student that he would seek to emulate his mentor (and, for that matter, to project a thoroughly respectable appearance) - though it is not impossible that Doctor Seward is, in fact, the fair-haired gentleman in the bowler (given the top-hatter's reaction appears more in keeping with "Art" Hollywood's reaction to the grisly spectacle presented).

Quincey P. Morris is, of course, so transparently himself that it is impossible to confuse him with either of the other two-thirds of the "Three Musketeers."

The guy in the Bowler hat (or more accurately 'Derby hat') is Dr Seward. My impression of the good Dr was that he was somewhat untidy & devoted completely to his work rather than his appearance, as such I chose to depict him slightly less flashy clothing... utilitarian rather than Saville Row..

Doctor Seward definitely seems like the low-maintenance type; one must admit that my association of him with a top hat is mostly based on his introductory scene (where Miss Lucy describes him proposing to her only AFTER coming a little too close to sitting on his top hat).

A superb rendition of that awful moment when the Vampire Westenra reveals herself as child-hunting horror; while her neckline is pure "Hammer Slammer" that face ... one can only sympathise with Lord Godalming's response to such an inhuman distortion of a once-beloved face (viz - to do his best to blind himself to the horrifying truth that Vampires DO exist and that one of them has taken dominion over the young lady who had once been his intended).

Yeah, the low cut night gown was definitely a tip of the hat to all those Hammer movies that I loved as a kid, & still do. Unfortunately, the publisher wasn't quite so enamoured & so had someone draw patches to cover up the offending boobage before publication.

Hmmm ... I feel so TORN; on the one hand PRETTY LADY, on the other hand one doesn't want to distract audiences from the Drama with all that pulchritude.

Without that, there wouldn't be any drama.. or there's be less. The whole point is that Godalming is torn, he see's his wife & is trying to convince himself everything will be ok, & that vampires aren't real. If she was a completely hideous harpie, he's just be saying "Okay guys, just stake her already!!"

A perfectly fair interpretation of the scene - I tend to read the scene as a case of Lord Godalming being first sensibly horrified by the appearance of his deceased beloved as a Predatory Corpse Bride (he actually tries to physically block out the sight of her), then coming very close to perishing under the influence of the Vampire Westenra's nascent powers of mesmerism exert themselves ... only to be blocked by Van Helsing, whose resourcefulness & scholarship are the equal of his shock & horror.

It's always fun when the same text produces two very distinct interpretations!
