Description
Last year, I undertook a project to explore what makes a national flag or symbol. I wanted to suggest what might occur if all the European nations decided to design new flags from scratch, without using current or historical flags. It’s unlikely most nations would want to change their flags, but the resulting artwork proved popular, so I decided to create this follow up project, this time focusing on Asia.
Notes
Certain small or awkwardly shaped nations or exclaves (Brunei, Bahrain, The Seychelles etc) have been omitted due to the difficulty of showing them on a map of this style. All the flags and symbols used in this artwork are either products of my imagination or are used fictitiously. Where national or historic symbols have been used, these are freely available public domain images or are used with kind permission of the artists. No attempt to breach copyright has been made and all reproduced images remain the property of the original artists.
The idea of this project is to show all of the alternate flags on one map of Asia. The size of the map means it shows some nations in the Middle East, East Africa and Southern Europe which are not normally considered part of Asia.
This project features one fictional nation...see if you can spot it.
Please let me know what you think of this project in the comments. I’d love to hear what you all think of my designs.
This map is a work of fiction, as are all associated flags. No political comment or endorsement is made or implied.
