Description

Last year, I undertook a project to explore what makes a national flag or symbol.  I wanted to suggest what might occur if all the European nations decided to design new flags from scratch, without using current or historical flags.  It’s unlikely most nations would want to change their flags, but the resulting artwork proved popular, so I decided to create this follow up project, this time focusing on Asia.

Notes

Certain small or awkwardly shaped nations or exclaves (Brunei, Bahrain, The Seychelles etc) have been omitted due to the difficulty of showing them on a map of this style.

All the flags and symbols used in this artwork are either products of my imagination or are used fictitiously.  Where national or historic symbols have been used, these are freely available public domain images or are used with kind permission of the artists.  No attempt to breach copyright has been made and all reproduced images remain the property of the original artists.

The idea of this project is to show all of the alternate flags on one map of Asia.  The size of the map means it shows some nations in the Middle East, East Africa and Southern Europe which are not normally considered part of Asia.

This project features one fictional nation...see if you can spot it.

Please let me know what you think of this project in the comments.  I’d love to hear what you all think of my designs.

This map is a work of fiction, as are all associated flags. No political comment or endorsement is made or implied.

This is an interesting project. Since there is a bit of a hullabaloo in New Zealand about a new flag, I'm interested in what you'll come up with for here.

Waldiya does stick out like a sore thumb to me, but I do look at maps of the Horn of Africa often. (Edit: fixed spelling.)
Woldia is a real town in Ethiopia, however. I had to double-check with my map, I knew it sounded familiar.

Also, the link next to India is for the Ceylon/Sri Lanka flag.

Thanks for the heads up on the India link, just updated it.

New Zealand could be a challenge, I haven’t started on that one yet, hope you like what I come up with.

Well done for spotting Waldiya.  I’m thinking of adding similar ‘Easter Eggs’ to future projects (Alternate flags of Australasia /Africa/North America/South America).  Does that sound like a fun idea?

You're welcome. Good luck for the rest of the project!

You should do similar projects for Africa, Oceania and America as well. Nobody ask you to include nations which normally aren't belong to that continent.

I am indeed planning future projects for Africa, Oceania and America.  I haven't yet decided which one to do next - any countries you'd particularly like to see?

Well, I would say that Oceania should be the start XD I'm Asian, Southeast Asian to be particular. So Oceania is virtually our next-door. Beside, Oceania has the least number of nations in the world so it's easier to do it first.

Next should be Africa. End with America. Btw, as much as I'm disguise with the current rampages from American nationalists, exceptionalists and religious bullshits, I do not wish for the United States to be divided. Maybe I'm just too optimistic and pacifistic, but I believe in reformations, as deep as possible, not outright breaking everything.

Oceania it is then.

It might be a while, as I'm about to start a busy period at work and I want to be able to devote sufficient time to designing flags which fit with the culture and history of each nation.  Just as you say, reformation is better rather than outright breaking everything (When I do the North American map for this project, I don't plan on dividing the USA)

BTW, what did you think of my South East Asian flags?  I'd value your feedback.

Take your time, mate I'm also pretty much busy with life and work, so I understand that feeling.

For the flags, I'd say you did a fair job Although flags for Vietnam and Malay are a tiny, whiny, little bit plain :-D But you did try to make flags based on each nation's culture and tradition ---> A brilliant job, actually, since so many nations today based their flags rather on politics or religious.

In a geo-political timescale, politicians come and go so fast I don't think its worth using politicians as inspiration for flags and symbols.

I get what you mean about Malay, I struggled to think of what to put on that one (now, if only my boss would fund a three week 'research' trip)

Awesome maps, but what happened to Djibouti?

SteamPoweredWolf In reply to Doomseas [2015-07-12 16:25:20 +0000 UTC]

I ran out of time.  I wanted to get this project uploaded as I have a busy few weeks coming up and I simply couldn’t think of an alternate flag for Djibouti.  I’ve omitted a few other nations too, either due to their small size or not being able to show them properly on the map.

If you have any ideas for a flag for them, let me know – I hope to reinstate Djibouti for a future Alternate Flags project.

It took about five weeks.  Bangladesh and Qatar were probably the hardest ones to design flags for.
