Description Emma is one of the more recent additions to the Pennsville Scenic, being purchased just recently at an auction in California. She is a former Santa Fe 4-4-2 Atlantic built by Burnham, Williams & Co in 1905 for passenger service on the ATSF. Originally, this was not what she looked like when she first rolled onto the Santa Fe. She looked like a late 19th century steamer before, sometime afterwards, she was upgraded to her current look. When the railroad decided to retire their Atlantics, Emma and most of the other upgraded Atlantics were set aside for preservation. Some went to the Locomotive Preservation Society's museum in Brooklyn, some went to tourist railroads, parks and museums, while Emma was put in storage incase she was needed for emergency use, though that never happened. In 1988, while being stored in San Diego, the Pacific Southwestern Railway Museum in Campo reached an agreement to purchase the 4-4-2 and operate her with their other operational engines, including Joanie the Southern Pacific 2353. After a year long rebuild, Emma began pulling tourist trains on the PSRM's trackage and even trips through the beautiful Carrizo Gorge on Ryan Lines' former San Diego and Eastern trackage through the gorge. In 2007, the 4-4-2 was taken out of service for her rebuild and was sent to RL's shops in Los Angeles for some minor repairs. Recently, the Pennsville Scenic purchased Emma and requested Ryan Lines to fully rebuild her to operation, which they did, and now she hauls passenger trains on Wallace and Gromit's branch line.
