Description To try and make me feel a bit better after today's event, here's a screenshot of EGRR #611 arriving at Delilah Falls with The Danville Tiger one evening. Various buses at the nearby trolley/bus station are parked nearby while the lights in the city are starting to come on. The city is still a huge WIP but I hope to make it really interesting and beautiful too for plenty of screenshots, especially on the trolley line. But from here, it looks sorta like a complete city, doesn't it?

There was no other 4-8-4 Northern that was the strongest or the finest ever built than the fabulous Norfolk & Western's 'J' class; a massive streamlined steam locomotive of the East.
Designed at the N&W's Roanoke Shops in the same time when giants were also built, the class 'J's were assigned for heavy passenger runs which they were able to haul 10 heavier cars in well-known express consists such as the Powhattan Arrow, Pocahontas, Cavalier and the Tennessean.
It began with good intentions in the passenger business, but in the later 1950s, all of that had changed when dieselization, steam part supplies and ticking clocks forced the steam engines to call it retirement; sold as junk or put into a museum.
Even the class 'J' locomotives had no advantages beating the newly-purchased diesel engines that took over the passenger work, having to make do with the freight drags until the 1960's.
The 611 was one of these streamliners under threat of dieselization, but fortunately against the odds, the 611 was spared from scrap before it was put onto display at the Wasena Park in Roanoke, Virginia.
This last-remaining streamliner even survived an major accident in '56 when it was stored for an overhaul repair.
12 years later into the early 80's, the N&W returned the 611 into its new life in excursion service at the Norfolk Southern Steam Program after being restored at the steam shops of Irondale, Alabama.
The locomotive was a crowd pleaser for at least about five years until it was accompanied by another restored N&W locomotive number 1218, before further excursions involved many double-heading runs with other locomotives such as Nickel Plate #765, Frisco #1522, Southern Railway #4501, Nickel Plate #587 and even 1218.
In 1994 however when the Norfolk Southern Steam Program was over, the 611 made its final run as the last-remaining N&W locomotive after the 1218 was also withdrawn from service.
Once again like in the 60's, the streamliner was placed onto display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, but not forever.
21 years later in 2013 first, a campaign called Fire Up 611 raise a immense number of money to restore the streamliner into action for its second new career.
Having steamed up in 2015, the 611 the N&W's crown jewel roared the rails for the first time since its early hood in the bygone steam era.
Today, this engine continues its excursion service throughout 2016 and onward, leaving a army of railfans to wonder which N&W locomotive may be up next to ride on the rails again.
