I originally use a grey background on a separate layer, but then erase the background (or hide), so then is left with just a white canvas
when I save it as a PNG a pop up thing appears saying:
24bpp RGB
32bpp ARGB (Each Pixle have a Opacity)
I use the 24bpp when I have a background usually, if not it will stay white if you dont use any color
and use 32bpp if I want a transparent image
but I believe it might be different with other programs
