Description Another project from the same illustration class earlier this year. The project was about world disasters and I was very interested in bubonic plague at the time. I was also fairly obsessed with rats (They are cool as hell), so i wanted to have one in there. So in my research, I found a neat little piece of information. I guess we got an outbreak of plague in 1900 in San Francisco. So that's the time period in case you're wondering. I really like this one.

My objective here was to create a sweet moment amidst the pain and horror of the plague. The focus is not really on the plague itself but on the importance of coping mechanisms for children. Something as simple as a pet can at least create some fleeting comfort and distraction from a sick kid's perpetual misery and frustration.
And also, to take the heat off of rats. Rats didn't spread the plague, fleas did. They just happened to be riding on rats ^ ^;

Watercolor, colored pencil, and pastel pencil on wood. All painting done with one tiny brush and my fingers.

Once again, a couple of you should recognize this

Oh yeah, I must have spent 10 hours in total at petco staring at the rats over that project. I had complete rat mastery at that point XD

three seashells, and two sparklers.
We cool?

how 'bout like, "was learning cursive really necessary?" in cursive?

chimera3372 In reply to SteelWoolMustache [2011-11-19 03:00:50 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking something more like "Sari is the bees knees"...But I think I very definitely like yours better.

That reminds me about when I was taking my SATs. We had to write this disclosure thing in cursive. 99% (Not including myself) of them didn't know how to write in cursive.

SteelWoolMustache In reply to chimera3372 [2011-11-19 03:43:41 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah, its like, once you've got your signature down to muscle memory, you don't need to bother with cursive again. Unless you're some kind of...scribe or something. Most people are not...scribes.

chimera3372 In reply to SteelWoolMustache [2011-11-19 04:08:59 +0000 UTC]

Well...I'm not a scribe...
But I write half of my school work on paper first, not on the computer...
And half of that half the time I write it in cursive...>.> <.<

I guarantee I've seen worse...
I couldn't for a long time, too.
Then I started working with a third grader learning cursive who asked me for help all the time. o.O

SteelWoolMustache In reply to chimera3372 [2011-11-26 10:07:53 +0000 UTC]

ooo, but 3rd graders have an unfair advantage when it comes to bad handwriting ;o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chimera3372 In reply to SteelWoolMustache [2011-11-27 23:40:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that they do.
But it's personally quite upsetting when a third grader asks you for help and you don't know how to help them... ;(

SteelWoolMustache In reply to chimera3372 [2011-11-27 23:46:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, handwriting and really anything that involves motor skills or muscle memory isn't really something you can teach. You just do it in front of them and if they're sharp they'll imitate it right, sooner than later. Its like trying to teach a kid how to sing. There's no way you can describe the processes involved, but eventually they just do it on their own, intuitively.

I've been trying to convince myself to teach myself how to write left handed...

It always weirds me out to watch lefthanded people write. Its like, how? How do you do that? It feels unnatural. My mom is lefty and it still gives me the creeps ;-;

Yeah, I know right?
My brothers both lost their right pinky fingers in accidents. I really don't want that to happen to me.
I figure that if it does, I could beat it by knowing how to write. But I dunno...
