I start with a block of Plexiglas. I order them cutted and polished, because that's not that easy to do if you don't have a machine for it. I either use a Dremel with different milling tips or, in this case, a laser cutter to form the cutie mark. Starting from the inside (the deepest parts) to the edges, the laser engraves the picture layer by layer. It may look to some like the gems protrude. Even when seeing it IRL some have this illusion. But the are not. The acrylic is melted away in the shape of the gems. Then  I bend an aluminium sheet to form the base, put some LEDs, a switch and a connector for the power supply in it, solder them together and then glue everything together.

Thank you! I was a bit worried that the gems were too deep (there are much deeper than intended). But I guess it isn't really that noticeable.
