Description John inhales, breathing around the urge to cough, and lets it out slowly, watching the cloud of smoke curl upwards with dispassionate eyes. The intermittent tremor in his left hand, come back with a vengeance over the past few weeks, has temporarily ceased. His lungs feel tight, alive. He’s starting to understand the appeal of it all, why Sherlock would have found this habit so hard to stop.

Dropping the spent butt, he pulls out a fresh one, flips open the lighter—and hesitates.

This is very not good, he knows that. Not good physically, not good psychologically. Not good for breathing, certainly. If he’s smart he’ll quit now, before the addiction has a chance to settle in. He’s a doctor, for heaven’s sake, he knows the risks. Six-year old children know the risks. True, he likes a bit of danger in his life—he’ll admit to that—but smoking… well, smoking…

Smoking smells like Sherlock.

Breathing is boring. The flame of the lighter hisses, and John takes another drag.
