Interesting effect here. The metro platform-area seems much darker than usual, perhaps due to the relative light coming from the metro-train. I never noticed how bright the train lights are.

The metro is very cool, and surprisingly clean for one in such a large city. It is, however, not open 24hrs (much to my vexation). They normally stop running around midnight, which means you have to take a cab or walk home when you go out at night.

Nice use of bright, sharp colours - good composition. However; it is noisy, and blurry.
I assume you've done this with a compact camera. It's a pity that they're so poor at dealing with low-light, because otherwise this would've been a great piece.

(my apologies for being critical.)

No problems about being critical

Actually, I didn't use a compact camera. I only shoot with a manual SLR. Light-metering and focussing is amazingly hard when a metro train is approaching you at warp speed Had I intended to take the picture, I would have adjusted aperture and shutter speed before well before the metro arrived... But it was a spontaneous type of shot. Hopefully next time I'll do better

Manual, film-based SLR?
They don't go up to ISO 3200, do they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stephzzb In reply to two-truths [2006-03-09 03:42:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, manual film-based. Really, my SLR is the only camera I ever use. I have a digital point & shoot, but I never take it out of its case since I am easily frustrated with the lack of manual controls digicams offer. Unfortunately, I have not yet secured the funds to buy a digital SLR system... I'm a poor college student, what can I say?

ISO designates film speed, not camera speed. Thus, film cameras "don't go up" to an ISO, but rather can be set to accomodate the type of film you have put into the body. Any film camera will be able to shoot a roll of ISO 3200 (be it a brand new Nikon F6, or an old Minolta SRT like mine), although you wouldn't always want to. The higher the ISO, the faster the film speed - which makes shooting in low light easier - but also the more grain you get. I tend to shoot with ISO 200 and ISO 400 when I shoot colour, sometimes higher when I shoot B&W (usually ISO 800).

two-truths In reply to stephzzb [2006-03-09 09:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I realised that, sorry I wasn't aware that they produced film of such high speed - the ISO sensitivity is something that they mark as a major improvement for dSLRs. A dSLR would be able to shoot that shot better because it can shoot at ISO 3200 without too much noise.

Not all compact cameras are point-and-shoot. That is actually the largest misconception which is currently going around, and is lending itself to a lot of camera snobbishness.

I use a Sony V3 , albeit an equal alternative is the Canon G6 . Both offer a high resolutuion image, with detail levels that rival dSLRs, and a reasonable ISO range of 100-640. They belong to a wide range of prosumer compacts; cameras with full manual control, including manual focusing (to a varying degree).

Slightly cheaper are the Canon A- series; A620 or the recently released A700 . They are lighter and cheaper but use smaller sensors and cheaper electronics, so are not as flexible.

Then; you have the super-zooms, with their x12 zooms, image stabilisation, and manual aperture / shutter controls. anasonic_dmcfz5%2Csony_dsch1%2Ccanon_s2is&show=all"Panasonic's FZ5, Sony's H1, Canon's S2 IS are all very highly rated for different reasons. All three manufacturers have recently released successors; Panasonic's FZ7, Sony's H2, and Canon's S3 IS , but these are merely incremental upgrades - nothing major has changed.

Panasonic have a higher class of super-zoom; their FZ30 is their current model in that range. Sony has also recently released their own heavier & higher-spec model; H5 . These are more like SLR-likes than their smaller brothers.

Finally; that brings us to the hefty SLR-likes. This range is led by Sony's R1 which has an awesome lens & sensor combination, some really innovotive features, and is more of successor to SLRs than a lesser alternative. Other contenders include Konica Minolta's A200 and Fuji's S7000 or S9000 .

(Doh; sorry. I forgot that dA screws up some links. That should be Panasonic's FZ5, Sony's H1, or Canon's S2 IS . Hopefully it will work this time!)

Yeah, uni is pretty cool, its nice to meet loads of new people... but it kind of sucks in a way because it means that you're not real close to anyone really... but its going fine.
