Description Batavia Yard series
Lelystad, the Netherlands

"The Batavia Yard in Lelystad, the Netherlands, is foremost a center for traditional shipbuilding. Since 1985 over 200 young people have built an authentic reconstruction of the VOC-merchantman Batavia from 1628. " - read more about this amazing place, and about the reconstruction of this marvellous sail ship here http://www.bataviawerf.nl/en/index.html

On the day we visited the yard, it was very rainy and windy - the dark sky made the ship look even more impressive, and gave some 'adventurous' touch to our visit of the place.

First of a series of pics about the Batavia yard I plan to upload in the coming days/weeks - just stay tuned

Hello,

I am writing a book called Plassey Road, a chapter of which features a Dutch cabin boy from Java who sailed to Bengal in 1757 in the Mossel to fight the British and later emigrated to South Africa. I would like to include your photo of the Batavia which I believe is of similar build to the Mossel. The book is expected to have about 120 pages with a print run of about 3,000 for sale in the UK only.

Can you offer me a price. please, for use of this image in my book. Or would you perhaps be interested in a copy of the book instead as payment for the permission?

With thanks,

Alan Postlethwaite

Yes, isn't it! And then to know that a similar one, the Prins Willem - one of the three replica's of VOC-ships in the Netherlands - burned down completely, a few days ago... Isn't that terrible?! - Luckily, the Batavia is still there... And so is the Amsterdam (yeah, in Amsterdam, indeed... ) I better make sure to go make pics of that one too, some time soon

Thanks, Lucie!

No, it isn't ... the one that burned was in Den Helder, the VOC-schip Prins Willem, isn't it? ... But it was a similar one indeed... What a loss and a pity!
