Stepz came from another dimension where an alien race lives called 'the Shadozz' live, Stepz ran away from the void she lived in, and landed in a world filled with ponies, because this world was so different from her's she tried to escape many times but couldn't find a way to go back to her own dimension, so she accepted her faith and tried to live as a pony.
Her cutiemark is a symbol of magic, its a kind of pentagram that shows 'magic expanding' which means that she wants to learn as much as possible, which made her live in an old mansion which she turned into her own personal library.
Due that she has trouble getting along with all the jolly pony traditions she rather stays alone in her library, she doesn't hate ponies but she finds them ignorant, she doesn't understand the pony ways and how they just accept princesses as rulers.
She just tries to enjoy her life as much as she can.
