yeah, if you use the pen tool to make a bunch of overlapping loops, then the places where they overlap are black, and the places where they don't are white. easy. the tangent lines are a bit more difficult to explain, but if you want to know, feel free to ask

I was doing something like that earlier, only without all the effects. just screwing with the pen tool with a fill, it was making fun patterns.
