Britain in this timeline became very isolationist with their empire, meaning they only traded between their own colonies like India, South Africa ect. and they became very protective of their closet allies, mainlg Belgium. With the growing tensions between France and Germany, Britain feared that one of the two would invade Belgium despite the fact that the UK was guaranteeing Belgium neutrality. No one in the UK wanted to go to war but they knew if anyone invaded Belgium they would have no choice, so as a display of power and to fully guarantee that Belgium would be left alone, the British government heavily pressured the Belgian government to join the United Kingdom. At first the Belgians didn't take the proposal seriously and just stuck with their previous agreement with the UK but after a massive propaganda campaign (conducted by the British media) that portrayed France and Germany as monsters ready to ignite a powder keg of war that would engulf the entire world and many references to the Hundred Years War and the Belgian Revolution (Forgot to mention, in this timeline it was Britain that aided the Belgians in the revolution, not France) popularity to merge with the UK grew so much that the government had no choice but to accept the offer. As a compromise, King Albert was made the first Secretary of Defense for life, giving him full control of the British Armed Forces. The only person he answers to is the King/Queen of the UK. Now that Belgium is a part of the UK and not just under protection, neither France nor Germany dared to invade. Though they have another problem with Sweden now, at least WW1 won't start.
