thanks...that means a lot coming from an artist like urself....tell me, how do u get started on pic ur doing....u start with a sketch first or just dive right in?

SteveStanleyArt In reply to BowlFreak [2013-10-04 13:12:07 +0000 UTC]

Hi Nick, you're so welcome. My montage illustrations are planned from the very beginning, starting with pencil (rough) thumbnails. I *aim* to draw out a set number of 9 thumbnails (they fit an 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper) and one is picked to evolve into an oversized color drawn thumbnail, or mini-drawing. (I like seeing the art smaller, in color, so as to more easily gauge the clutter and breathing space of the design elements.)Β After calling the colors out, I'll hunt for photo reference, or stage and shoot my own. Once that's done I'm ready to go to the final art, which is usually 15" x 20". The main reason I still work this size is because of the ease of portability. I found an easy-to-carry & superbly constructed artist attache-case that houses my work snugly, which makes it a piece of cake for travel to cons, shows, etc, and show my original work to editors, dealers, collectors in person. It may all sound a bit anal-retentive, but after all of these years it still seems to be working out. Β

Anyway, sorry for babbling-- hope this helps. --S--

Hi Steve! If I've done anything artistically correct within this piece, I think it's more of the toned paper that helps with the color theory, and I just follow along as the colors call my name. Thanks for encouraging me, I really appreciate that!
