I have a prickly pear and I LOVE it! They're wonderful plants
This is a great photo too, the clarity is incredible, and you can really see the textures of the bud. Congrats on the DD!

I have those growing in my front garden as well - and I live in Michigan. Imagine that, eh? They actually survive outside in below 0ΒΊ weather. Then in the spring they bud, flower, and grow new pads.
Pretty cool.

Remember that they had begun to gain popularity as oddities in England about 6 or so years ago when lived there, where they would survive the winter but rarely would make it to blosom/bud up.
Are such a pretty plant when in bloom too, rather plain and non-descript for the remainder of the year (unless happen to fall one one.... when the descriptions are colorful to say the least

I started off with a few pads about 15 years ago. They were given to me by my aunt who lives in New York city. I've transplanted mine only once, when I moved from one Michigan city to another. Every year I get really nice yellow blooms which then turn into deep red cacti fruits. Eventually I'll have to cut them back because they're starting to outgrow the space I have them growing in. Now that's going to be fun since they're so dangerous to touch.
