Hatching Day

Such a joyful and celebratory day.

But today is not one of those days.

Today is the birth of 28, or so that is what the one called 'Mother' referred to the newly hatched quill. She called 28 'special' and her 'little angel'.... whatever that meant. Mother left 28 to 'make friends' with the others, shouldn't be hard right?

28 quickly found that the others were not too kind towards the quill... 28 was met with glares, scowls, and growls. 28 couldn't understand as to what the quill could have done to upset them…

There was a group of friendly gros that gave 28 some hope. However, as they gave friendly grins, 28's heart sunk. The quill miss interpreted their giggles as mocking. This… miss interpretation only got worse.

Every whisper 28 thought was about them, every chuckle made at their expense, everyone in the room staring at her. 28 often ran away to safe, empty places to reflect with her tears. Why… Why do they hate her? Why don't they leave her alone? Is it because 28 is 'special'?

If that's the case, 28 doesn't want to be 'special'. It wasn't hard to see what made 28 so 'special'. She was able to recognize she has 'feathers' and the others have 'fur'. So if 28 just removes her feathers she would no longer be 'special', right? It was a flawless plan.

'Mother' was not pleased when she found out.

'Mother' was looking for 28 so her little angel could have dinner with the others. But when she found the quill, 'Mother' had stumbled onto quite the sight. 28 was surrounded in a halo of broken feathers and droplets of her own blood. 'Mother even watched as 28 pulled out a feather with her underdeveloped beak.

Enraged, 'Mother' picked 28 up and scolded her. She took the quill, removing 28's collar and giving her a bath to remove the blood stains. After 28 was dry, she was given a new accessory to help nip this self destructive habit in the bud…

A cone.

The cone stopped 28 from being able to pluck herself and made life overall more difficult. If 28's 'special' wasn't noticed before, this cone would put a giant target on her back. 28's paranoia and anxiety only got worse with the addition of the cone...
