The truth is, whenever I see someone post "I'm a devote Christian...Buddhist...Atheist...," it lets me down a little. I feel like I can't like them as much as I could, because of that small difference. I've had terrible experiences, especially with Christians.
I try not to be negative though, and remember that everyone is different, it's just hard sometimes, almost I guess, like a learned instinct.
I consider myself an Agonistic Theist, though in my childhood I was very much a Presbyterian Christian.

I feel a bit the same way and I think it's normal. You have a bit of dread when you learn that someone you know believes something that is so different from your own belief system. At the same time, we all like yummy food, we all laugh at internet cat pics; we're all human.
I'm very sorry that you've had bad experiences with Christians. I've known some hateful people who claimed to follow Christ and I have been hurt by them. It shouldn't be that way. While it can be a case of people being people (and everyone messes up), oft times it's someone saying they believe one thing and doing another. I won't pretend I'm a perfect Christian; -if we were perfect, we wouldn't need Christ- and accepting him doesn't make one perfect but some people tend to forget that though. My heart says one thing but my body wants to run its mouth and say cruel things to people. I want to apologize for how you've been treated; you deserve better and they should have been more Christ-like.
