Description This one really came together right at the end. I had blue sky and water and it just wasn't clicking. I simplified the color palette and it seemed to all snap into place. That was good to learn.

I like the early morning feel here. And yep, working with simple palettes always seems to make the picture more cohesive...

Color has always given me a bit of trouble. I think I'm going to explore the limited palettes more.

That's not a bad idea. I guess it's a good way of exploring colour combinations more simply without having too many factors to affect your perception of them together. I think it's incredible how much a perception of a colour can change depending on what it's being compared to. I tend to get a lot of inspiration colour-wise from nature and the environment. Why struggle with trial and error when there's a free colour gallery all around us?

Do you sample from photos then?

No I don't bother...pictures mostly have so much variation on a pixel level it's a little bit hit and miss (I suppose that's what the average-sample picker functions try and address). I try and burn the general colour combinations into my memory first off, especially if it's a "live" viewing . I take a pic if I can to jog the memory more than anything (since the camera generally doesn't really get the impressions of natural colours viewed by eyes that well without more tweaking that I don't have time to do), and then I just try and get it right by eye. My autumn speed paint palette for example was put together from looking at LOTS of pictures of autumnal colours and then picking some I liked, not necessarily all from the same pic either, and of course doing adjustments along the way.

Aha. So you've made palettes to pull from? I should look into that.

aha light bulb idea for a speed paint: put up a palette, and tell us to go wild. (without a theme)

btw have you seen this? [link]

if you need a bit of inspiration (or stealing ) It's not the colours but what you do with them eh? I haven't used it at all but it's cool just to see lots of combo's in one place quickly.

I have checked out similar color palette sites recently. I'll have a look around.

well technically i haven't actually made any custom palettes but it would be a good idea. I tend to put down a few colour swatches on a layer (if in gimp) or use a nifty thing called the mixer in Painter. After that I tend to just use my finished pics to sample from if I want to use that particular palette again. eventually I'm hoping all possible colour palettes will be burned into my memory..
