Yeah, after lover-and-painter mentioned it, I looked up some of Mondrian's earlier work. I was surprised how close it was. It was completely unintentional. I hadn't even seen his earlier stuff before.

Tetris?!? I think it's more like Mondrian.

ehh. sort of. I've done some stuff in his style before. He did very clean work for the most part.

This looks like early Mondrian (his European phase, before he moved to New York)

Yep. I see it now. I hadn't looked into his work past his more well known stuff. A friend and I painted the top of the wall in our office at work in Mondrian's later style.

Cool! Mondrian is a great master.

hmm. His work is somewhat interesting to look at from a design point of view, but master is not necessarily a word I'd attach to him. How would you flesh out your assertion?

Mondrian was essential and a great master in the search for abstraction and pure forms and color. He, as many other avant-garde artists of his time worked hard to break the ties between painting and the representation of actual objects, scenery and people. Today abstract paintings seem natural and common, but this was only possible after a long process of artists moving away from representationism towards simplification and towards the essence of concepts. It's hard to tell exactly where that process started. It might have been the impressionists who painted not exactly what they saw, but also what they felt. Or maybe the cubists who abandoned aesthetics and reality in order to favor their concepts. The guidelines of reduction and simplification introduced by Mondrian and other De Stijl artists were essential to conceptual and abstract art and that's why I call him a great master.

Ok. There are some good points in there. I see where you're coming from now. I must say though, this reads like you pulled it from an encyclopaedia (or an essay from some website).

On another note, I've noticed quite a few people on dA with the same avatar that you're sporting. Where did that come from?

I pulled it from my head. I had 2 years of art history class in college.. hehehe

My avatar is the standard for those who haven't uploaded an avatar file. But I will do that soon.

aha. Well, then you speak as an art student who paid attention in class.

I see. That must have happened when they changed the look of everything recently. Now that you mention it, I remember it used to be the da logo.

hehe
You like my colors? I find that's what I struggle most with, though I also put a lot of importance on them.

I can clearly see bottle of peach wine out there
I really enjoy looking at your painting. Those lines with shadows at their sides invite my eye to go into this labyrinth.
