Description Alright. This is the Ghost Rider picture I have been working on as a part of 's Character of the Month for November.

This was inspired by Clayton Crain's work on the Ghost Rider books through Marvel.

Basically this is my done by hand version, coloured with coloured pencils, I did give the background a quick touch up though as it was a bit dirty looking

Ghost Rider certainly was a challenge to do and I do plan to digitally colour the inked version at some point in the future, but probably not for a while yet.

And before anyone starts... I'm sure the motorbike isn't completely up to scratch... I have no idea about Motorbikes

Anyway, as per usual I am most interested to hear what everyone thinks

I just remembered I got a premium membership recently! let's see what I can do with this....
I feel like once you were inspired, you just ran with it and was able to crank out this beauty. :]

Of course, we've seen some images like this before around: some sinister looking fellow riding a motorcycle... but the way you pulled it off is something I've never seen before. You obviously have the colored pencil technique down very well. I only feel like the motorcycle looks a bit unfinished in shading when put in contrast with the figure...

The flames and chains are rendered well and compliment the whole piece a lot.

My favorite part of this piece is probably how the shading on the shirt/vest/jacket is :]

I just feel like this piece is missing a definite light source though [but that may be because of the flames all around casting lights of their own...]

overall : really good job :]

now to go off and practice more of this "legit" critiquing that's not in comments ._. ... or something

I couldn't agree more with what you have said here.
I did really enjoy working on this piece, the Rider especially. It was quite the challenge and I do agree the bike is probably my least favourite part.

I really appreciate the feedback, your critique was superb and I find this sort of feedback very helpful.

I think if you can't take these sorts of things on board then you'll have trouble becoming a better artist.

Personally I use this sort of feedback to see where I need to improve, then I work on it.

What a fantastic job on this drawing. Your pencil work overpowers what a digital artist could do normally, with ease.

I myself have never seen Ghost Rider, but I'd sure watch it if it looked like this! Fire looks 'real' and the skull is very menacing (I hate skulls e.deviantart.net/emoticons/f/f… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Sad)"/>!). There's nothing I can see to critique badly on, and I'd say my favorite part is the coloring of the sky.

I sure wish I could draw like this, let even more so color it like that! You are one skilled artist, and I will favorite this along with critique because I actually do look back at my favorites.

This is one of the best things I have critiqued so far!

This is quite nice! 


The dark parts definitely pack a punch! It's quite hard to get color pencil that dark.


It's also quite hard to add highlights for color pencil - you'll find the digital version more flexible and forgiving

How exactly did you approach the background? It's also done with colored pencils?
It seems like something that could be approached with water color Have you thought about using water color instead?

Funny you should say that, I used to do a hell of a lot with water colour but I haven't touched them in years

This was all pencil though, I was hoping to try and get a smokey sort of feel, not sure if I achieved that though. How I did it... I used sandpaper on the coloured pencil to get the coloured dust, spread that across the paper then then basically just rubbed it in. Hopefully that makes some sort of sense

mhm...I know that you can buy colored pencils in chalk form so that you can use sandpaper on them.
The reason I ask is because it's so difficult to get colored pencils to get smoky and loose that it looked too good to be done in colored pencils it looks like water color so

I tended to just use some cheap coloured pencils I had lying around.
I agree, this was so difficult to do and I reckon I spent just as much time on the background as I did the picture itself

I really need to break out my water colours again though and see if I can still use them.

Very cool. I love the way you've played with the proportions on GR, making him this hulking mass of leather atop which the flaming skull sits... Very poetic. Also jives great with the chopper he's on.
