Description I browse dA and find a lot of horse riding ignorance everywhere. There seems to be a pretty widespread misconception that the correct way to ride a horse is in the fetal position. Not so.

Riding in the fetal position is a sure way to lose control of your horse and fall off. Your horse will also likely think you're an idiot and will laugh at you from afar once you've bit the dust.

I guess what I'm saying is... it would be nice to see stock images and art where the people aren't about to fall off their horses, yes?

LOL! This gave me a giggle!

As a distantly-related story, when Red Dead Redemption came out, a friend showed me a promo for it: Grizzled, scarred badass gunslinger and his black, snorting, red-eyed steed.

I about fell over laughing.

I had to explain that if I were wearing a western saddle backwards, I'd probably be grumpy too.

LOL.
I used to have the fatal "chair" position.
Then I went normal after falling and getting hoof'd in the face.
Then I went fetal position.
And now I have a broken arm!

Yeah, I see exactly what you mean. But what I see even more than that is photos and drawings of riding in the "chair seat." If you've taken lessons, you'll know what I mean.

i love this. i am a leg-position nazi. i don't care how good a picture may look, if my leg is just a centimetre out of position i will delete it. same goes for the rest of my body. i love my position and i've worked eleven years to get it the way it is today - and i still think it's far from good enough ! i would love to see more riders dedicating their time to their own position and not just the horse's.
<3333.

The picture is done beautifully; Their expressions are priceless! Its wonderful... xD

I would agree only if it wasn't for the fact that
I have a fucked up leg, therefore keeping my
leg that straight kills me. Then again, I train
my horses -- they are use to the way I
ride and take no heed to the postion of my leg
compared to straight. I don't ride with my legs
against my chest which is the FETAL position
I ride with my knees bent a tad and my heels
are unable to remain down for long. However,
I have placed high despite that -- so I think it is
humorous but then again, I do not take it into
mind because I have no other choice than to ride
in such manners.

wander-dragon [2007-06-05 14:46:21 +0000 UTC]

*laughs*

One of my earlier teachers wanted to ducktape me into the correct position. But it wasn't because I had my legs really far back, it was because I was in the chair position.

*snicker*

because I think this is the most wisdom you can ever get out of any deviation in this whole place.

It pains me to see so many of the photomanipulations or drawings. The work is just beautiful-but honestly, if you ride with your lower leg THAT far back...

...Meet Mr. Ground! It can be very, very cruel.

Thank you. Thank you. As a horseman, you kinda have to blindside yourself to people's stupidity when it comes to riding, otherwise you never enjoy yourself (learned it the hard way) I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices it. Feet forward, HEELS DOWN! Head up, shoulders back. <-- Riding 101.

GreenEyezz-stock [2007-05-17 03:22:10 +0000 UTC]

This is so amazing! Thank you so much for putting this on here because I see this from time to time as well. I also see a lot of people putting models on horses in photo manips and the artist makes the rider to small, very unrealistically small. You should make one of these tutorials on what the correct size of a person is to a normal sized horse (that way people won't submit pictures of a girl ridding a giant sized horse)

lol I know exactly what you mean I've had some of my own stock photos used that way. The best was someone took one of my photos of a pony who's only about 13hh and put a tiny person on it to the point that he looked bigger than a clydesdale lolol
