Thanks did you know that recently, some of the tanagers were reclassified as belonging to the Cardinal family?

No, I don't really keep up to date on many changes. I hear about too many that 'might be reclassified' and kind of prefer to live in ignorance until 'they' have decided

Anyhow, I'd still take a look if you have a link?

Hahaha, I understand that.

and while I could look up the articles about the reclassification, I find that Wikipedia summarizes quite nicely which groups have changed. [link]

Thanks. Ah f..., as long as they don't change the names so I can id what I find, I'll be happy.

Have you noticed how many different names there are in Spanish for some species? (I think I've occasionally used different ones for same species on here too).

Haha, yep. There's also the matter of my ornithological societies disagreeing with those in South America, and the arbitrary choices made in some field guides on which society's classifications to follow. I had some trouble with the Pale-mandibled Aracari a little while back.

No surprise there (disagreement)

Great example: [excellent ornitholigist] Tito Narosky's guide to the birds of Buenos Aires - best guide you can get for the area, except for the names. The names are all local Argentine ones (although some are same elsewhere), and quite a few Latin / English names are incorrect (close, but a nightmare finding correct on a couple)

Oh man, that would be horrid to sort out later... especially with how I log my birds!

Do you know about the site ebird.org? It's how I track all of my sitings and share my data with other regional birders.

I know of the site, but don't actually track them anywhere other than in my brain (yeah, that'll eventually cause it's own problems I know!). The wife logs trip-lists on Birdstack while I stick to the stress of getting the right id

I might have to try Birdstack, it looked like an interesting program (and it is partnered with eBird, I found out)

I tried going birding today and was overwhelmed by trying to separate and id the gulls

The owner/creator (I hope that's right...) seems to be a guy called David, and he was very helpful when my wife sent some queries on bird names a week or two ago. (which again goes back to local names)

Seabirds are my least favourites of the avian world, can't really say why - colours, id-ing, getting close for a pic, etc..?

All of the above, and I quite agree with all of those issues... though I have a fondness for terns and many other seabirds, aside from the grief they give me ID'ing them

I admit I like the Inca Tern and also the Royal Tern's pose (pointy!)

Pointy indeed! Though I've never heard it put that way before

I think I thought that way before I was really interested in birds. Then, sometimes nicknames are quicker/easier than real names (which is why Southern Beardless-tyrannulet became "Punk" as I also named my photos of them )

I understand that though it's the opposite for me, the nicknames have come from hanging around other birders for too long... Modo, C-Goose, LBB (mourning dove, canada goose, little brown bird )

I've heard the LBB one before from US bird-bloggers saying it. Not met many birders in person, so we corrupted ourselves

A few years ago, while living in Buenos Aires and when we visited Uruguay, we named an unseen bird "Eeeek" after it's piercing call - we thought it was one of the seabirds for almost a year, but it was a Great Kiskadee
