Description
I started this piece a few months ago to #SupportUkraine .
For the nearly two years since I joined the DA community, I wanted to keep as far away from politics as possible. Today, I feel that those who remain silent are not very different from those who refuse to acknowledge current events. Some truths need to be spoken. An artist I admire and respect helped me see that art and politics have a long, emotional history, and that it’s okay to let ourselves express our views through our art. Opinions are what makes humanity so diverse. After all, many of the most enduring movements of history begin with a single voice.
Though I knew almost nothing about Ukraine before the war, I feel it’s very important to stand firmly on the side of freedom. Maybe my definition of the word does not align with other Americans’, but I strongly believe that democracy needs to be protected. It’s not a right, it’s not a guarantee, it’s not something to take for granted. January 6th, 2021 showed me just how quickly democracy can die. Thankfully, it endured that day. However, Ukraine is facing the same threat to democracy. The difference is that January 6th only lasted several hours. Even today, the war rages on. Ukraine’s struggles are our struggles worldwide. As far as I’m concerned, every single person in the country is extraordinarily brave, determined, resilient, and so much more. Their tragedies, sacrifice, and strength will not be forgotten. They will never be forgotten.
Since I’m not in a position to contribute financially, I decided to support the cause by spreading further awareness and recognition. Even the smallest voice can make a difference. I hope maybe someone who can support the cause will do so because of this. This work started from a traditional sketch which I then decided to color digitally. I went for a SUPER cartoon-y style because it’s fun to experiment with and because I wanted to draw attention to the emotion. I have an easier time creating facial expressions with my cartoon style. This work has only 41 visible layers which is the lowest number I’ve had in a while. XD Though this war does not involve my home and my safety, I feel very passionately about it.
Ukraine is the very definition of strength. Let us never forget that.
