Description the City of Steelton handles their own sanitation needs. for a while, garbage collection was contracted out to Allied Waste Services, with the city owning all the equipment. in 2009, the city assumed full control of garbage collection. the cities trucks are color coded based on what type of waste they collect. blue for regular trash, green for recycling, and brown for yard waste. the city has a mixture of older and newer equipment. the oldest vehicle in their fleet is a 1991 White GMC WX64 rear loader. It still sees limited use during spikes in trash accumulation, and cleaning up after large events. the city has been continually modernizing their fleet, with their newest purchases being Autocar Xpeditors. the city has a small fleet of roll-off trucks for construction projects, and to be delivered to larger businesses and industries in the city. the city also owns grapple roll-off trucks for yard waste collection and for large household waste collection. yard waste collection happens once a month between March and November, and large household waste collection happens twice a year. it's a day where the city comes and collects larger household items that won't fit in a regular trashcan. things like furniture, appliances, lumber, construction waste, etc. the city owns stakebed trucks for hauling away larger items like big appliances. semi tractors are used to haul waste from transfer centers to the landfill. the city sanitation department also enforces environmental codes, illegal dumping, and permit inspections.
