It may just have been something that I have seen done but leaving a couple of hiddy holes where a character sleeps/drops off stuff they want to keep but don't want to carry with them so he has the chest/ the bed for sleepery... and for game reasons not so much comic reasons spawn reset

Why would you want to reset your spawn to underground? What if you get lost and can't find your way out?

Mainly so that if you do die so that you can grab your stuff before it despawns

I've never had a problem with things despawning too quick. You get five minutes and that's only if the chunk is loaded. Unless you mine extremely far away from home and you're on a server with someone close to you, you don't have to worry about losing your stuff.

If you had a problem getting back to your house then it would stand to reason you would have the same problem getting from your house to where you were killed. Getting lost doesn't only work in one direction. If the possibility of getting lost is a concern then your stuff would despawn in 5 minutes if it was a problem finding your way back, your house would never despawn and you would have all the time in the world to find your way back. I think it comes down to a style of play thing but that would be my reasoning for it

I can understand if it would be an enderchest, because then you can have one in you house and take one down in the mine, so If you find diamonds you can put down the chest and put the diamonds in and break the chest. but I have no idea why he would have a bed.

I would. I keep extra chests so when Im mining if I need more space I just throw away useless stuff (usually mob drops unless they're arrows)

I never keep chests in my inventory, I just keep a stack of wood. That way, I can make a chest if I need to but I don't have two inventory slots taken up as opposed to one.

Planks are great because they can replace sticks in your inventory too. Plus, if you're too deep, lost, and your last pickaxe breaks, a pile of planks might just be your lifeline to the surface.
